Then, using a range of different modalities (EMDR, Flash technique, Internal family systems , Somatic therapy, CBT and others), we find more useful ways of coping and understanding ourselves within the context of our lives.
I work with adults and adolescents who have experienced trauma or suffer with anxiety-related issues such as panic attacks, phobias and so on. I believe that with counselling your quality of life really can improve. Trauma can include life-threatening events or simply moments where you were overwhelmed and felt helpless. Trauma is often held in your body and strongly affects how you think, behave, react and feel. Together we find the right tools for you to better manage your feelings, thoughts and behaviours. Then we work through the issues gently and carefully.

I also specialize in IFS (Internal Family Systems ).
I work in my practice helping people who seek therapy for a range of emotional and stress-related issues including stress, anxiety, worry, depression, anger, panic attacks and grief. I believe that everyone deserves to live a full and meaningful life. I endeavour to create a compassionate, non-judgmental and transformative space for my clients and always practice with these values in mind. During times of struggle or stress, we can at times disconnect from what's important. The counsellor’s role is to get to know you, and for you to develop a greater understanding of yourself in a supportive environment, working at your own pace.

Sometimes in life you need a place to explore the difficulties that arise. Either behaviours, feelings or emotions. At times you need to be listened to confidentially and without judgement. What troubles our minds can have such a negative impact on the quality of our lives. Psychological troubles come in many forms, relational both to oneself and to others, grief and loss, behavioural problems from anxiety or depression and rage or sometimes it's hard to tell exactly what it is, only a sense that things are not right. The first brave step to take is to share that difficulty.

Counselling can help you find the words for experiences you were previously unable to speak about. You can learn to recognize and express your feelings. Counselling can teach you how to set healthy boundaries, how to be assertive and how to stand up for yourself. You can also learn how to allow yourself to be vulnerable, in a way that is safe for you. You might discover that it is ok to be human, to make mistakes and to change your mind. Counselling can help you tune into your gut and to learn how to trust yourself.

Making choices and empowering from within: Through collaboration, building the relationship and offering a sense of humanity, Ray has found people feel safe and comfortable to discuss any issue whilst also realising the need to do it at the client’s pace. Understanding by encouraging a client to make their own choices, the presenting riddle can be solved. By this I mean the labels of depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem/confidence become less defining. Built on these achievements is a new sense of personal happiness and fulfilment: dealing with any issues in mental health, addiction and beyond.

I am an experienced Chartered Counselling Psychologist who works with adults struggling with a range of issues, including feelings of worthlessness and self-hatred, relationship difficulties, depression and apathy, anxiety and avoidance. I also have a particular interest in helping people who have suffered abuse, trauma or systemic oppression to relieve themselves of self-blame and start to heal and feel strong and in control again. I fundamentally believe that people's intense distress and troubling symptoms are not a sign of deficiency or disorder, but a reasonable and understandable response to what they have been through.

Being human is not easy. It can be challenging to find something safe to rely on to when so much changes, sometimes without warning. Therapy provides a unique space to safely explore the painful parts of human experience, including difficulties with anxiety, depression or relationship issues, for example. Therapy can give the support and safety needed to explore and understand your experience, and often to reframe the beliefs, feelings and behaviours of your lived experience, so that ultimately you suffer less.

The way I work is guided by the values of curiosity, creativity, and compassion. My aim is to offer you an accepting, non-judgemental environment where you can really be yourself; a safe space where you are encouraged to explore, question and grow in your own time; where every experience, feeling and part of you is welcome, particularly those ones that have been out in the cold. At the beginning, the process can be like a ball of yarn, with many different threads tangled together. We will work together as a team to unravel these threads, weaving them into something that makes more sense and is hopefully more manageable.

I work with couples and also individuals. Face to face work is possible in Clontarf on Wednesdays. I see clients on Zoom on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. My times on these days include mornings, afternoon and evenings. I offer an initial brief fee free contact - I use our this initial meeting for me to get some sense of what you want to achieve and for you to ask any questions you may have. If we decide to proceed with working together I usually agree a short series of meetings before we review our work together - we may then decide that what has been achieved is sufficient or continue for a further series of sessions.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Counsellors

What is Internal Family Systems therapy?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a type of talk therapy that focuses on sub-personalities, or “families,” within a person, which may be made up of wounded parts and unpleasant emotions like anger and shame. These sub-personalities can come into conflict with each other and with an individual’s core Self, leaving the person feeling detached from positive traits such as the “8 C’s” of confidence, calmness, creativity, clarity, curiosity, courage, compassion, and connectedness. By healing a patient’s wounded parts, a therapist aims to restore balance and bring on positive change.

How does Internal Family Systems therapy work?

An IFS therapist will work with a patient to identify their particular sub-personalities, recognize the emotions powering them, and release them. By doing so, the patient should become more able to address any underlying problems their sub-personalities may have been trying to protect them from. Ultimately, a patient discovers ways to manage internal and external conflicts on their own, through techniques such as relaxation exercises, journaling, and making charts depicting the relationships between their core Self and their distinct parts.

Does Internal Family Systems therapy work?

IFS therapy has been shown to help people address conditions such as depression, anxiety, panic, fears and phobias, trauma, and substance use disorders. Some research has also found that it can help individuals deal with symptoms of physical health conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, such as pain, everyday functioning, depressive feelings, and low self-compassion. There are some conditions for which IFS treatment, specifically discussions of one’s “parts,” may be less appropriate, such as schizophrenia or other states that involve psychosis or paranoia.

How long does Internal Family Systems therapy take?

As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for IFS therapy. After becoming comfortable with a therapist and the core concepts of IFS, some patients quickly make progress. While experiences vary, most will find that it is a relatively longer-term therapy, involving months and sometimes years of sessions.
