Initial experience working with clients who suffered from eating disorders then working for many years with depression and a wide range of emotional and relationship issues.
Using the psychodynamic approach-exploring past events and understanding how these impact your life today is my central way of working. It allows clients to gain a deeper insight into the presenting issues. This promotes agency giving clients confidence to use their own resources to deal with life events.

I have worked with issues such as anxiety, depression , trauma, stress, self-belief system issues, loss, bereavement, interpersonal relationships, etc.
Starting the counseling process is like deciding to take a road trip into parts unknown. Some parts of the journey will be familiar because you’d gone through them in your mind before and some will be foreign. The journey inward can be tiring, emotional and frustrating but also cathartic, and the feeling of achievement only grows with each new step into the unknown. The counselor is your tour guide who is there to give you directions on your journey and gently guide your expeditions, keeping you company when the road gets rough.

I work with a broad range of issues including, but not limited to, depression , anxiety, stress, addiction and addictive behaviour, alcohol and substance abuse, low self-esteem, family and relationship issues, eating disorders and phobias.
As an integrative therapist I adapt my approach depending on the individual client to ensure that their needs are addressed. Depending on the reasons you have sought counselling, I will work with you to prioritise where the focus of the work will be. This may involve exploring some past events and how they are impacting on your life now. Or it may also involve examining current issues of concern and I will offer support as together we explore new ways of understanding and managing these concerns.

Most of us are very good at bottling up how we are really feeling, this can serve us in the short term but sometimes these suppressed feelings will express themselves in more destructive ways such as explosive anger, frustration, depression , anxiety, self-harm and even physical illness. I will work with you to gently allow suppressed feelings emerge so they can be explored, understood and given the attention and kindness they deserve. I work indoors, online and outdoors in nature; where ever we decide to work I will create a comfortable, safe and held space where you can talk about and begin to heal whatever is going on for you.

I decided to train as a professional counsellor after my own experience with depression . It's such an incredible privilege to be able to use my own life experiences to help others. Whichever way we work together, the relationship between us will be what enables the changes you wish to make and I will consistently offer empathy and support, no matter how difficult some of the things we deal with may be, and to be honest and upfront with you. This will help to nurture an environment in which you feel truly heard, valued, and empowered to make positive change.

Life can be challenging and can bring hardships, conflict and pain. Often people seek therapy at a moment of crisis where they want change in their lives. Psychotherapy offers the possibility for an individual to explore various aspects of their life and be listened to in a way that is rarely possible with family or friends. My experience includes working with psychiatric diagnoses, those affected by issues and symptoms of anxiety, stress, depression , bereavement, addiction, relationship issues, questions of gender and sexuality.

Primarily, I deal in the areas of Low Self-esteem, Depression , Anxiety, LGBTQ+, Grief & Loss, Sexuality, Inner Child Wounds and Anger Management.
I welcome all clients regardless of gender or sexual orientation. Clients who have experienced traumatic episodes in their life. Clients who have felt they have always been on their own. They may have always felt that they have had no one to protect them, never felt loved or nurtured. Clients who feel they are totally disconnected with who they are. Such clients may feel they are totally lost and have no direction in their life. I welcome all such clients to my practice. Together we will find the reconnection to Self and in doing so find a purpose and goal in life.

I have experience working with many different issues including, Anxiety, Depression , Trauma, Bereavement, Self development, Self-esteem issues and Suicide prevention among others.
People sometimes experience difficulties in life and may need a little extra help and support. This is where I come in, as sometimes it can be easier to talk to a professional about your problems or worries than it is to talk with your family or friends. My aim is to respect and support you through your counselling journey while acknowledging and exploring whatever may arise during a session and work through the issue in a non judgmental safe therapeutic space.

Depression , anxiety, stress, suicidal ideation bereavement and loss, self-esteem, sexual abuse, trauma, sexual identity/orientation, bullying and workplace issues, life transitions, relationships and intimacy issues, body issues.
From my perspective, psychotherapy means healing. It is the opening, where individuals begin to experience a more full contact with themselves and the outside world. I help them understand their emotions that signpost their needs. I help them to discover their unfulfilled needs and, together, we look for obstacles and barriers that could prevent people from fully enjoying their lives. One step at a time, they become increasingly ready to lead their lives consciously. They begin to authentically live, rather than continue, their lives.

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognise and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioural activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
