I work in a client-centred way using a client’s strengths to change their relationship and circumstances. I believe that we are responsible for changing the course of our own lives but when we get bogged down in problems it is easy to lose sight of that. I work with challenging thoughts, setting clear and achievable goals, and using one’s strengths to change circumstances. Being a child and
adolescent
psychotherapist enables me to understand that our coping mechanisms stem from early life and our challenges. In therapy, I find it helpful to make links between early adverse experiences and current problems.

I am a qualified, accredited therapist working in North Dublin. Originally from England, I have lived in Dublin since 2006, raising my family here. I started my training in South Dublin in 2012, and my passion has taken me to research and develop a deep interest and understanding of Attachment. I believe having this understanding enhances my work with depression, anxiety, bereavement and grief, trauma and parent-
adolescent
work, in addition to the therapist-client relationship. It is also important for me to use my skills in other areas of my life. As such I am a lecturer at IICP and director with Empowerment Plus.

Sometimes when struggling with various stressors we often fear reaching out for help. Therapy can support you to process painful experiences; increase your ability to cope day to day, and address long term issues affecting the quality of your life. Are you an
adolescent
at risk, a family looking for help with coping skills related to conflict, a couple looking to work through conflict or marital issues; have you experienced trauma? I work with complex client needs such as sexual abuse, substance misuse, relational issues, and mental health including other anxiety, emotional and behavioural issues.

My experience stems from working with the child and
adolescent
mental health services (CAMHS) and the child and family agency (TUSLA).
Young people experiencing emotional and behavioural disturbances can find it challenging to communicate or understand why they feel this way. The process of Child Art Psychotherapy can benefit in many ways as it is relational and fosters consistency and containment. The psychoanalytic and psychodynamic approach of Art Psychotherapy incorporates verbal and non-verbal communication to gain insight into the child's thoughts and beliefs systems. The focus of therapy is to understand the unconscious material that influences behaviour and emotions in order to foster change and promote healthy psychological functioning.

Teen Counsellors
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
