I believe in the inherent hu manity within us all and in celebrating the unique subjectivity of each individual.
If you are an adult and have experienced abuse and/or neglect during your early years, then this is an area I have a particular interest in. Equally, if you are looking to gain insight into how early experience comes to shape and mould our adult selves, then perhaps I can help. It may be that you are experiencing a lack of joy or meaning in life and are looking for a safe and confidential space to explore your inner world. You may have anxiety, depression, obsessional thoughts, addictions, relational issues, loneliness, or it may simply be that you are attempting to situate yourself meaningfully into the greater social fabric

Hu manistic, emphasising people's capacity to make rational choices and develop to their maximum potential.
“The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction, not a destination.” Carl Rogers. The world we live in is constantly challenging, particularly if we are already feeling stressed or anxious. This stress can lead to lasting feelings of sadness, anxiety or depression. But this does not have to be the case. We all have within us the ability to live a more fulfilled and happier life. A good therapist helps realise this potential by facilitating self-discovery and acceptance and using this for emotional growth.

Relationships have the potential to heal. Psychotherapy seeks to fulfill that potential. Psychotherapy creates an atmosphere of connectedness and union, in order that difficult experiences or emotions can be safely shared, acknowledged and integrated. The therapeutic connection becomes the safe space in which this happens. This emotional integration enables change and growth to happen for you. Whether you need to explore your relationships, your internal world or something difficult from your past; therapy has the potential to help.

My approach is hu manistic, psychodynamic and cognitive.
Clients come to counselling when their normal coping mechanisms are no longer working for them and they are feeling overwhelmed, confused and afraid. It may be due to anxiety in their life, stress in work or relationships, low self esteem or depression. They come looking for clarity, a sense of understanding that they are not alone in what they are feeling and perhaps for practical techniques to manage the conflicting emotions. They also want to be really listened to and not to be judged as they tell their story.

Life is challenging. Everybody faces difficult issues in their lives at one time or another. It could be with your partner, family, at work or with friends; remaining stuck in the same patterns of behaviour and preventing you from growing and moving on to live a more fulfilled life.

Making a first call or writing an email can be anxiety-provoking when reaching out to a psychologist, but many people feel some relief at taking this step.
People can experience difficulties or challenges at any point in their lives, such as anxiety, low mood and trauma. At other times, life events like bereavement, the ending of a relationship or unexpected illness can make people feel upset, distressed and confused. The help and support of a clinical psychologist can help ease these painful feelings and work towards adjustment and an improved sense of well-being. If the source of the difficulties are not obvious at first, a psychological assessment can also be helpful.

When we are suffering we tend to look at all that is wrong in our lives. We sometimes make judgements and assumptions about ourselves or our situations that focus mainly on the negative. We each have developed ways of being in the world that have enabled us to cope with whatever challenges we have had to face. These coping strategies become our defence mechanisms and are often developed by us at an early age when we had few resources. They can sometimes create negative patterns of relating to others and the world around us and become barriers to intimate or professional relationships.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
