Therapy must feel safe before it can be productive. To this end, I initially attempt to provide a sense of ease in counseling sessions. From there the conversation tends to reveal what you might like to get out of therapy- these goals can be anything at all: from wishing to feel less anxious, sad, irritable or troubled, to addressing relationship difficulties at home or at work, to trying to better understand a feeling of being unfulfilled, or to think or feel differently about the past. In many cases, the goal is to just to have a safe place to discuss anything at all in a confidential, non-judgemental setting.

Contact Via WhatsApp/Email. My focuses are relationships, eating disorders, & addiction. In both our relationships with self and others, most long to experience love, belonging & growth. In relationships and in hardships, I see infinite potential for transformation and evolution: through the stuck places, the old patterns, the failed attempts to connect or feel safe. Underneath, the true you is waiting to be heard through the surface ‘symptoms’. If you can recognise where you’re at, you’re halfway there — and rather than just treating the symptoms, together we listen to what’s underneath, and help you to get free from the root.

Life can be challenging and at times can feel overwhelming. During these times, it can be helpful to have a safe, non-judgmental space where you feel heard and supported. Counselling and psychotherapy will provide you with the space to discuss and explore issues which are important to you or causing you worry, help you to gain an understanding or insight into who you are and what your values might be, and find ways to live a more meaningful and fulfilling life.

I am a fully Accredited Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist who works with adults. I believe that by providing a confidential and safe environment can allow an individual to speak freely about their life and/or psychical suffering. This important work can provide insight into one’s relationships, life experiences and lead to the easing of psychical suffering. I place the individual’s unconscious in a privileged position within the work and I believe that it is through speaking that understanding can come about and change can take place.

My work is guided by the understanding that many emotional patterns and life challenges develop quietly over time, often outside of our immediate awareness. As Carl Jung wrote, “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” In therapy, we gently explore these underlying patterns together, helping you gain insight into how past experiences, emotions, and beliefs may be shaping your present life.

My work is primarily rooted in psychoanalytic/ psychodynamic principles, which is particularly beneficial for those who have experienced trauma, those who have long standing challenges and those seeking deeper personal exploration and understanding.
With over 15 year experience as a clinical psychologist in the mental health services and hospital settings, I am experienced in working with people who have experienced complex challenges in their lives, including early trauma and those with longstanding mental health challenges. I have a particular interest in helping people who have been suffering with physical symptoms (chronic pain conditions, functional neurological disorders among others) where medical treatments have not brought relief.

Hi my name is Joanne. Seeking therapy is one the greatest gifts of self-love and courage we can give ourselves. Wherever you are in your process my role is to offer a warm, safe and non-judgmental space to explore your thoughts, feelings and patterns. Therapy offers the opportunity to explore your experiences without judging them. I believe in meeting clients where they are and honouring each and every individual’s needs within the therapy space. My role is never to direct but only to walk alongside to navigate the changes and needs of every individual.

I help people who feel overwhelmed by stress, caught in anxiety, or weighed down by low mood. Many clients come to therapy wanting to feel more like themselves again or to understand why things feel so difficult. My work is about creating space to explore these feelings safely and at your own pace.

Psychodynamic Counsellors
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
