I invite parents to be an instrumental part of this process too.
Primarily I work from a humanistic, integrative and trauma informed approach. I like to meet people where they are at. I have found, both personally and professionally, any expression of a struggling part of the self provides us with an opportunity to learn, heal and thrive. I have seen this pave the way for very liberating experiences for clients - both adolescents and adults, and something I consistently strive to harness in the work. I have a keen interest in working with the shadow, or darker aspects of the self.

When we are suffering we tend to look at all that is wrong in our lives. We sometimes make judgements and assumptions about ourselves or our situations that focus mainly on the negative. We each have developed ways of being in the world that have enabled us to cope with whatever challenges we have had to face. These coping strategies become our defence mechanisms and are often developed by us at an early age when we had few resources. They can sometimes create negative patterns of relating to others and the world around us and become barriers to intimate or professional relationships.

Clients often come to see me with difficulties such as depression, anxiety, bereavement and grief, trauma, relationship difficulties and parent-adolescent work.
You may already have an idea about counselling, but it is important to know that there is not one type of therapy that suits everyone. My main priority is to work with you to develop trust and ensure you have a safe space (free from judgement) to work. We can then use a range of different methods including art, talking, music, worksheets and mindfulness.

Whether you are struggling with a specific trauma, feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, or just know that something is not right, taking the first step towards therapy can be daunting. My mission is to offer a safe contained space to explore this trauma with an integrative approach. Using Somatic Experiencing and EMDR along with talk therapy, together we will walk together on the journey of healing. Somatic Experiencing is not about "reliving" your trauma rather we "renegotiate" your trauma in order to empower you to move from a state of helplessness to one of thriving.

My own journey into psychology began with an interest into how we tick as human beings and why some of us seem to suffer and cope better than others. I soon realised that where I really needed to be was with people, helping them better understand and heal themselves. Now, as a qualified psychotherapist for many years, I not only get to do just that, but I also get to witness first-hand the courage and growth of my clients that is forever inspirational.

Parenting Counsellors
What does therapy for parenting look like?
Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?
When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?
Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?
Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
