Hi, my name is Georgia Cashman. I work as a humanistic and integrative counsellor in Cork, both in person and online via Zoom. I have a genuine interest in helping others, and a big positive for me doing this work, is helping people gain perspective in their lives. My role is to facilitate clients in getting to a place where shame, guilt, and feelings of 'not being good enough' can be managed, so that they can reach their full potential and not be held back by negative and disempowering feelings and emotions. I am here to listen.

Life can feel overwhelming for all of us at times, You may be struggling with anxiety, depression, perfectionism, or low self-esteem. Perhaps stress is taking a toll and feels unmanageable, or your relationships feel challenging and unfulfilling. You want to feel more confident, balanced, and in control, but right now, you’re stuck in patterns that no longer serve you. You may long for clarity, emotional relief, and healthier ways to cope but feel uncertain about where to start. You don’t have to navigate it alone. With the right support, healing and change are possible.

The stress of modern life can lead us to experience anxiety, depression and many other symptoms. Whilst bereavement, change and loss are all natural processes, they can also be painful and destabilizing which can create feelings of anger, helplessness and vulnerability. Challenges in the present can also unearth experiences from our past which we might not have had the opportunity to fully understand and process. These feelings can seriously impact on our lives including relationships, physical health and work such that it can sometimes feel we are out of control.

I work exclusively with couples. Many people come to me when they are in the middle of a specific crisis, feeling a deep sense of flatness, or are at a crossroads trying to decide the future of their relationship. Whether you are seeking marriage counselling or are in a committed long-term relationship, I provide the support you need to find clarity. I am passionate about helping couples build a solid connection and, where possible, avoid premature divorce. I never suggest ending a relationship; my role is to facilitate your goals. I also help those who want to separate to create a "good ending" with mutual respect.

I work with adults who may feel overwhelmed by anxiety, past experiences, or patterns in relationships that leave them feeling stuck or disconnected. Many people come to therapy carrying things they have held alone for a long time, unsure where to begin. In our work together, we create a space where experiences can be explored with care and curiosity, helping you understand what may be shaping how you feel and respond in your life.

Our world has changed beyond recognition in the past few months and for many people it can feel very overwhelming. Fear, panic, anxiety and stress are all too common in the clients I am meeting on a day to day basis. I hear how isolating it is for people at the moment. Relationship and connection are vital now, more than ever. Talking with a trained professional can help make sense of what you are feeling. Through this therapeutic relationship, you can find connection, healing and the space to speak about the difficult challenges you are going through.

There are times in our lives when we feel left behind, unheard, hurt and lonely. In today’s world it’s often difficult to find a true connection with another human being. Relationships, life management, work, school, stress, anxiety, identity issues can be really overwhelming.

As a psychologist & integrative psychotherapist, I draw from a wide range of approaches: Gestalt, existentialism, person-centred, CBT, transactional analysis, attachment, family systems to name a few.
People seek psychotherapy and counselling for different reasons. Maybe for you, it's a time of crisis, change or you're feeling stuck, unfulfilled or overwhelmed. You may feel life is out of kilter. Or you might be carrying something a long time and now feel ready to talk to someone about it. Taking that first step can be daunting and takes courage.

I am a humanistic, person-centred therapist and I belived passionately in this model of psychotherapy. It emphasises the power you have in changing your own life. When I sit with someone in a calm, non-judgemental environment and listen to a person's story, fresh perspectives emerge. By taking the time to tease out your thoughts, feelings and behaviours, you can begin to make sense of life and your place in the world. Such personal work is not always easy. Coming to terms with our deepest feelings can be painful and upsetting. It can also be a huge relief and release, a coming to terms with our true authentic selves.

What is gestalt therapy?
Gestalt therapy is based on the idea that to address unresolved negative feelings, emotions must be not only discussed but also actively expressed in the present moment. The term is from a German word meaning “whole,” and gestalt therapists believe that people should be considered whole entities made up of mind, body, and emotions. Gestalt sessions are rooted in the notion that a client’s total self must be discovered, explored, and confronted, so that they can take greater responsibility for themselves and their behaviour, learn to satisfy their own needs while still respecting the needs of others, and reconnect with feelings they might otherwise deny.

How does gestalt therapy work?
Gestalt therapy sessions do not just involve talking with a therapist. Clients may take part in role-playing, re-enactment, or artistic exercises like drawing and painting, with the goal of becoming more aware of negative thought patterns that limit happiness. One common gestalt exercise is “the empty chair,” in which a client sits across from an empty chair representing a partner, relative, boss, or a part of themselves—and, with the therapist’s encouragement, improvises a dialog with it. The intention is to bring the emotions raised by past conflicts into the present and work through them in the moment.

How long does gestalt therapy last?
As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for gestalt therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. New patients should understand that it may take some time to become comfortable with gestalt exercises but once they do, they should expect sessions to extend for a number of months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions.

Does gestalt therapy work?
Gestalt therapy has generally been found to be as effective as other forms of talk therapy in helping people living with anxiety, depression, phobias, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders, as well as helping individuals reduce conflict in relationships. Gestalt techniques, on their own or in combination with other therapies, can also be effective in managing physical ailments including ulcerative colitis, migraines, and back spasms. It should be noted that some people may have trouble adapting to gestalt therapy’s lack of formal structure or to a therapist’s close observations of their body language and emotions; others may struggle to commit to techniques that feel unnatural, like the empty chair exercise.
