Young people experiencing emotional and behavioural disturbances can find it challenging to communicate or understand why they feel this way. The process of Child Art Psychotherapy can benefit in many ways as it is relational and fosters consistency and containment. The psychoanalytic and psychodynamic approach of Art Psychotherapy incorporates verbal and non-verbal communication to gain insight into the child's thoughts and beliefs systems. The focus of therapy is to understand the unconscious material that influences behaviour and emotions in order to foster change and promote healthy psychological functioning.
My experience stems from working with the child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) and the child and family agency (TUSLA). Both internships offered psychotherapeutic intervention using Art psychotherapy for service users presenting with trauma-related symptoms, attachment deficits, depression, anxiety, ADHD, separation and loss.
I understand how worrying it is for parents when their child experiences psychological disturbances. Symptoms may be fleeting or prolonged and can have a negative impact on the child's sense of self, daily functioning and quality of life. Should you have questions about what steps to take to receive help for your child please feel free to contact me.
