I host an online therapy group for writers, artists, musicians and other creatives. It is a sympathetic and compassionate place to share the weight of the creative struggle with other people who understand the scale of the challenge and the emotional, practical and psychological difficulties that come with work of this kind. Meetings are weekly, £25 per session. Please get in touch if interested or curious. I’m based in Edinburgh, but participants can be anywhere.

ONLINE GROUP: This group is designed for those who might be struggling with ADHD and its impact on impulse control, anxiety and addictive behaviours. This is a safe place for those who struggle to understand why they think the way they think, why they think differently to others, and why can't they stop dealing with difficult (loud, intrusive, fast) thoughts and feelings in any other way than delving into unhealthy and often destructive habits. Learn about your issue and about different ways of tackling it with the help of a specialist and others who can identify with your problems.

My online therapy groups focus on relationship issues. They run on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Each session runs for 1.5 hours. Group psychotherapy helps people resolve their emotional difficulties and encourages personal development. Groups can become a source of support in times of stress and change. A safe space develops in these groups that enables members to focus on interactions and feedback between each other and this helps individuals resolve relationship difficulties and identify and change problematic behaviours they may experience. Connecting with others and their varied points of view helps people develop more empathy and improve their relationship skills.

Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us. Mindfulness is something we all naturally possess. And there’s growing research showing that when you train your brain to be mindful, you’re actually remodelling the physical structure of your brain. Pause. Breathe. De-Stress Mindfulness & Relaxation Group – 4 Week Block Hosted by: Giovanna & Lindsay (Counselling Psychologists) Tuesdays in June (3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th) at 12pm Mindfulness practices including breathing, guided imagery, and relaxation strategies

I currently run a Domestic Abuse support group for survivors. It is a very relaxed group where we sometimes chat and enjoy the safe space, and other times have difficult discussions where everyone feels supported and able to support.

An online support group to help cope with the challenging condition of chronic urticaria, also known as hives. I have lived experience, diagnosed 3 years ago. I am now largely in remission with only occasional mild outbreaks. Triggers and management vary, which we can discuss, but the group isn't medical. I offer mental health support and coping skills to manage the stress, anxiety and depression it can bring. Knowledge and support can help you live a better life, plus reducing stress and other mind-body distress can reduce debilitating symptoms. The group will meet online at an agreed time.

Anxiety Support Groups

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
