I specialise in supporting individuals who have experienced trauma, with a particular focus on serving personnel, veterans, and those affected by war. My work also extends to addressing childhood trauma, migration and asylum-related distress, emergency services trauma, and bereavement. With over one in three young people experiencing at least one potentially traumatic event before the age of 18, I understand the transformative impact the right support can have on someone’s life.

I believe in the power of growth and self-discovery. My approach to counselling isn’t just about coping day to day, it’s about helping you understand yourself on a deeper level, so you can move forward with clarity and a sense of your self worth. You might be feeling anxious, burnt out, or disconnected from others. Maybe social situations feel overwhelming, or you struggle to express yourself and be truly seen. Perhaps work is draining your energy, leaving you exhausted and unfulfilled. Or maybe you don’t quite know why you feel stuck, you just know something needs to change.

This is a group-based therapy also known as SPACE - supportive parenting for anxious childhood emotions. It is an evidence based model, with good results for children just by working with parents. We do not currently have a start date, but you can be added to the waiting list at any time. It is a great group for parents who would like to learn more about supporting their children to overcome anxious experiences and develop resilience. Parents of children who are experiencing anxiety, OCD, separation anxiety, difficulties attending school and other anxiety related difficulties would benefit from this group.

I'm Gemma. I'm a clinical psychologist with a passion for working with families and wider systems around people. I work with couples, and parents who are struggling with the behaviour of their children, particularly aggression or other risky behaviours. I also work with couples who are experiencing significant levels of conflict and harmful or abusive behaviour. Sometimes, my work is with parents who have separated and are trying to work out how to reduce the impact of this separation on their children, or repair or reconstruct relationships that have become strained or distant.

This is a group for people who are struggling to live well with Long Covid symptoms. I developed this group due to the loneliness patients were reporting because they didn't know anyone with symptoms such as theirs. It is really important to note: I cannot help you with breathlessness because I am not physiotherapy trained. But I can support with fatigue, pain, sleep, worry and goal setting. The group is 6 weeks long, for 90 minutes a week.

Have you engaged in therapy before and nothing seems to work, then I can help you understand why. **Ignore location this group is online** Binge eating thrives in isolation. During these times of social distancing you may be struggling more than ever with your relationship with food. The aim of the group is to bring together people who are struggling with binge eating/overeating. Group work can be a very powerful tool to reduce the shame that often surrounds this issue. The group can provide a space for you to increase your awareness about how you relate to food and help you to understand what is keeping you stuck.

Do you long to experience some peace, freedom and self trust around food? I believe this should be a birthright for everyone. If you are feeling out of control around food and concerned about the size or shape of your body, I get it because I've been there. I now use my professional and lived experience to help others find their way out of the prison of binge eating. I'm sure you have tried many times to gain control of your eating and maybe you're at a point where you're thinking there must be more going on than simply not being able to stick to a diet. Is therapy the answer?

Often clients contact me when other therapy has not helped them in the way they had hoped. This is often due to the complexity of difficulties being layered perhaps in a history of trauma. Distress in the body and mind can be triggered by what appears to be something superficial. This can open up the past or come at a time when our emotional resilience is low so this event has a greater impact than it may have done. We can find ourselves not being able to function in our normal way. Many clients often identify as 'good copers' and those who 'just get on with it'. Perhaps we can't now - this is frightening and can derail us.

I know how overwhelming it can feel trying to find a therapist who is right for you. I am looking at setting up a therapist peer support group. Sometimes supervison is not enough, we need more. This group will be a holding safe space for therapists to explore their client issues and own process. During my training in Person Centred Therapy, the 90 min PD sessions at the end of the academic day, was where I garnered a lot of understanding and learning about self. We are impacted as therapists all the time by our clients and it can be isolating and lonely work. This group bridges the gap. Tea/coffee provided. Crosby/Waterloo Joanne

Unheard, misunderstood, confused, unsure, lost, desperate, feeling stuck, wanting to feel 'normal'. Any of these reasons and more can lead us to seek Counselling. I have been a therapist for 12 years, and practice in a Person-Centred way. What this means is, I truly believe when someone comes to see me they want to be listened to, not told it will be OK, or try this and do that. You have probably tried those things and still feel the same. What's needed is someone with the skill to help you navigate your feelings on a deeper level, to give you greater understanding of how you have come to feel the way you do.

Hi, my name’s Ed, I’m a Therapist working online nationally. I work with people experiencing a wide range of difficulties from many different backgrounds, everyone’s story and reason for coming to therapy are different but all are equal. I offer both long and short term individual therapy, generally the length of therapy is something that we would discuss in our first session. In the case of longer term therapy we would frequently review as the therapy progresses to consider what work remains and when might it be appropriate to conclude therapy.

FAQs - About Group Therapy and Support Groups

How can I find a support group in PR2?

Search for nearby support groups by inputting your city, postcode, or the name of the group into the search bar. From there, you can filter to find a group that suits your needs, whether you are looking for support for a teenager, a group that focuses on a specific issue, such as depression, or a particular program type, such as one geared toward developing social skills. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

How does group therapy work?

Therapy groups are led by one or more therapists and serve to help people process their experiences and learn from others who understand their challenges firsthand. They can be based on a specific issue, such as addiction, grief, physical illnesses, parenting, and caregiving. They can involve a specific type of program or therapy, such as a social skills group or CBT group. They can also be specific to a particular population or community, such as teens or LGBTQ.

Support groups, like Alcoholics Anonymous, also focus on a specific issue, but are typically led by members with lived experiences and are less structured than therapy groups. Most therapy groups will meet for a fixed length of time with a consistent group of members, while many support groups meet for an indefinite period of time with members coming and going.

What are the benefits of group therapy?

Support groups help connect people with shared challenges or physical and mental health conditions. In a group setting, participants can receive support and feedback from peers and can acquire new skills, strategies and perspectives by listening to one another. Discussing your experience with someone who also has a cancer diagnosis, or whose son also struggles with addiction, for example, can help you feel less alone, reduce distress, find empathy and connection, and learn practical or medical information that has helped others. Group therapy can also be a more affordable option than individual therapy and just as effective.

Is group therapy as effective as individual therapy?

Support groups can be deeply valuable for both emotional support and/or treatment outcomes. It’s difficult to make a blanket statement on efficacy due to the many different types of support groups and conditions treated, but group therapy has been found to be just as effective as individual therapy in establishing long-term abstinence for conditions such as substance abuse, addiction and alcohol abuse.

How much does group therapy cost?

Group counselling is typically less expensive than individual counselling, with each session costing on average between £45 to £60. Meanwhile, individual therapy sessions can run anywhere from £60 to £150. It is possible to find low-cost group therapy options and many therapists offer group sessions free of charge.

Does insurance cover group therapy?

If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your group therapy sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for group therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

How long does group therapy last?

The length of a support group session is often one hour but can fall anywhere between 45 minutes and two hours. The amount of time that people remain in a support group varies based on their specific needs and goals and the type of therapy. Some individuals may seek a shorter-term group, such as a bereavement group, that may last between six and 20 weeks. Some may seek a longer-term group that lasts for a year or indefinitely.

What are the limitations of support groups?

Support groups have many benefits, but there are a few limitations as well. Support groups do not constitute formal therapeutic or medical treatment, and are not run by licensed mental health professionals, so some people may opt for group therapy or individual therapy instead. Additionally, support groups can depend on the other participants, so a disruptive individual has the potential to mar the group dynamic, and the anecdotal information shared may sometimes be unhelpful or inaccurate. Because it is a group setting, confidentiality can be more difficult to guard and participants receive less personalized attention than they would in an individual therapy session.
