At times in our lives we can all find things challenging. Sometimes we need a time and space to reflect, talk and be heard. We often need to find new ways of thinking and feeling, to gain new perspectives and move forward... Counselling is a way for us to do this. It provides a chance for us to address these difficulties, to work on ourselves, to explore our lives and to make them better. It is an important time in our busy lives when we can help ourselves, to better understand our challenges, and to learn about what we think and feel. From this we can enhance our experiences and make positive changes.

Do you find yourself struggling with life? Are you avoiding doing the things that you would like to do and feeling anxious or unhappy about the things you are doing? Do physical health problems get in the way of you leading the life you want? If you work with me, we would explore ways to help with your difficulties, increase your resilience and help you to have more choice in how you respond to situations. Often people experience aspects of their difficulties in a physical way within their bodies, I work with a mind-body approach which complements talking therapy and can help change things that feel stuck.

I have been working in this field for over twenty years now and I still have a determined passion for it. I am trusted to hear the life narratives and difficulties of those seeking support and my aim is to help you feel heard and empowered. I have never lost sight of this aim. I have worked with people who have felt very isolated by their own thoughts, felt intense shame, and struggled to cope with overwhelming feelings. Usually they have not felt able to talk to those around them for fear of judgment, embarrassment or rejection. I feel privileged to have been trusted by my clients which enables me to help lessen their burden.

Are you experiencing Anxiety, Depression, and PTSD? Is your mental ill health getting in the way of living the life you want to live? Many people receiving counselling with me have a feeling that there's no hope left and happiness is out of reach for them, but I promise you, it is not. Many clients who I see want to take back control of their lives. Improve their relationships, find meaning in their lives, and leave that feeling of hopelessness behind in place of a life with joy and purpose.

People come to counselling a for a wide range of issues ranging from trauma, PTSD to making a decision that is proving difficult to navigate or simply needing a space to talk without judgement. You may have a goal in mind and are unsure how to achieve it or are in an unfulfilling relationship and need some guidance. I work pluralistically which means that I tailor therapy to your needs, for example you may like to work creatively or you may like to use traditional talking therapy, if it is within my training remit I am happy to give it a try!

Hi, I am Susie, a friendly psychotherapist who has experience of working with a diverse range of clients within a confidential environment. For me, the heart of counselling is a good relationship between client and counsellor. This helps to create a safe and respectful setting for exploration, reflection and understanding of what is important to you. As we are all individual and unique, people will naturally need different things from counselling. I use an integrative, person-centred approach which means that we can work together in a way which best suits you, drawing from different techniques which will support you.

There is hope for Angry Men! “The little things irritate me into arguing! I want to stop…” MEN and ANGER: A misconception – “I am just a fiery person, I can’t change that”. Not true! Are you getting irritable and angry at even the littlest of things? Do you drink to try and shift away from those feelings? Is it impacting your relationships? Are you arguing more than you really want? The longer this goes on the more likely it is your relationship will irreversibly break down. You don’t want to end up with heartbreak, loneliness or a broken home, only seeing your family at the weekend?

We each have our own particular blend of resources and limitations, specific to us and unique as a fingerprint. That's why my therapeutic counselling doesn't provide 6-step plans, workbooks or programmes. It's open, free-flowing and exploratory. It takes the time to clear a regular safe space in which to unpack the events, relationships and emotions that you bring with you to this moment. To think about your feeling and feel your thinking. To talk, to laugh, to be tired, angry, uplifted or simply just to take the time to be. With compassion, empathy and without judgment.

If you’re struggling with the impact of sexual or domestic violence, you may feel anxious, disconnected, or stuck in survival mode. Trauma can manifest in many ways—difficulty trusting others, emotional numbness, feeling constantly on edge, or struggling with self-worth. These are not signs of weakness; they are your mind and body’s way of trying to protect you. Healing from trauma isn’t just about talking—it’s about reconnecting with yourself. I integrate somatic approaches that focus on the connection between your body and mind, helping you release stored trauma and develop a sense of safety within yourself.

Life can be hard at times. We can experience loss, changes in our health, family circumstances or work life. Maybe our relationships are not fulfilling our needs and we do not know how to change things. At times, we don’t feel good about ourselves, we lose confidence in our ability to cope with life or maybe we feel impacted by past experiences or held back through feelings of anger, shame or guilt. Sometimes we don’t know what’s wrong, but we just know something isn’t right. I can help you explore what is going on for you by giving you a supportive space to talk and be heard.

Finding the right therapist can be challenging, especially when you're unsure of what you need. I believe that the key to successful therapy lies in the therapeutic relationship. I strive to be genuine, warm, and even bring some humour when appropriate - I believe that a smile and a laugh can help create a safe and meaningful space for our sessions together.

Are you puzzled why 'things' are not working out for you ? Do you feel 'stressed all the time ? Are you curious about why you are the person you are ? Why you live the life you do ? Is there a pattern you recognise about yourself, that you 'don't get' but seems unchangeable? Do you feel 'stuck' and unable to live the life you want? Does that desire to live the best life you can seem limited by illness or a potential or actual genetic blue print that isn't changeable ? If you have any of these thoughts or similar, then I can help you to find your answers. I have energy, experience, resources and commitment for this work with you.

I have experience of working with chronic pain and staff support. I work with depression using Behavioural Activation and CBT for depression, I am trained in mindfulness and Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) which is particularly helpful for people with high levels of shame and self- criticism. Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
