Hello, my name is Lou and I am passionate about helping people find themselves again. If you are going through a difficult time, don't be alone, we can face whatever you are struggling with together. I listen with an empathic approach offering reflection and support when needed. I understand how challenging life can become and will support you in finding the power to achieve a more satisfying life. I believe everyone deserves to explore their feelings in a safe space feeling heard, understood and respected because I think each individual has their own answers. Enquiring about therapy is the first step to recovery.

I work as an integrative psychotherapist and will tailor our sessions to your needs. I believe that we are all capable of transforming our lives. Profound and fundamental change occurs with the realisation that the most important relationship we will ever have is the relationship with ourselves.

“The wound is the place where the Light enters you.” — Rumi Therapy is a tool to resolve the challenges in your life, to help you feel more confident and more in control, providing insight and showing you a path through the experiences that are part of being human. Life can put you in a lonely place, maybe too hard to cope with, complicated, challenging or confusing. I offer you the space for your story to be told, heard and understood in a confidential, non-judgmental safe space. There is nothing that cannot be "worked with and worked through".

People come to therapy when they’re stuck. Whatever the issue, they also bring their feelings, including one of the most fundamental feelings of all: discouragement. When courage takes a hit, we question who we are, whether we have what it takes, and whether we are enough. To face the challenges that confront us when we're living our lives, we need to have courage - and full access to our courageousness - so that we can face whatever comes, connect with people and feel a sense of belonging, notice our strengths and whether we overuse or underuse them, and feel like we make a difference in some way, in the world.

Selecting a counsellor can be a daunting task, at a time when you feel vulnerable. It is a courageous and empowering decision. Emotional struggle and difficulty with mental health can happen at any time and for many reasons. During these times you can feel lost, empty, lonely, or despairing. Whatever issues you are facing, I can offer you compassion. I aim to provide you with a safe, accepting space, where emotions can be openly spoken, supported, and valued. I believe that we all possess the understanding of what we need for personal fulfilment, however, at times can need support to move forward, I can offer you that support.

Do you constantly feel anxious and frustrated with yourself ? Do you keep repeating the same behaviour patterns ? There is a reason for this. I have helped many clients to work through traumatic life experiences. You can start again with a new self confidence that comes from a place of love rather than hate for who you are. Things do not have to stay the same. You can change how you feel about yourself and learn to accept yourself, even the bits you don't like ! You can learn to regulate your feelings and work with them rather than being afraid and controlled by them.

I found my way to being a Psychologist because I am deeply curious about people and what makes us ‘tick’ and I struggle to see suffering without doing something to help. For most of my week, I work for the NHS in the Complex Needs Service, with people who have experienced trauma and who have complex emotional needs. I am also a DBT Therapist in our NHS Trust’s small DBT Service. Whether you're looking for help with serious mental health difficulties or you're just feeling stuck and struggling with motivation, Psychological Therapy can help!

I’m an experienced counsellor working in a Person-Centred way, using Narrative Therapy alongside other creative ways of working. I have over 16 years experience of working with adults, children, young people and families. I have found that working with compassion and empathy, to support a deeper more embodied understanding of our responses to difficult situations is a powerful and healing way of working for many people and can lead to deep change. I believe that we all have potential for becoming unstuck and that there is always a possibility of listening to ourselves with greater compassion and self-acceptance.

Life can be really complex and often overwhelming, leaving us at times feeling isolated and alone, even when we are surrounded by people. As such there might be many different reasons why people come into counselling. Sometimes the issues we experience have clear causes and explanations and at other times it might feel less obvious and harder therefore to identify. What I would hope to offer you is a place that feels safe, supportive and confidential where you are able to explore whatever it is for you personally that you want to address without fear of judgement and criticism.

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realised.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
