My work includes managing impact of past trauma in the present, men's and women's issues, identity, self esteem and confidence, communication and assertiveness, different stages of parenting, relationships, attachment and connection.
Hello I’m Selene. I have 20 years of experience as a counsellor. I am a warm and open-minded person with a good sense of humour. I offer a welcoming and confidential space where we can together create an empowering therapeutic relationship. I believe you are an expert in your own life and my role is to support and challenge you reconnecting with yourself and your strengths. Counselling is an opportunity to give yourself the time and space to imagine who you want to be. Sometimes fear and shame make us stuck and disconnected from others and not able to ask for what we want. Therapy can help you free yourself and open connection.

Life can feel hard - even overwhelming at times - but it doesn't have to stay that way. Often, people find talking to someone who understands can help to shift difficult feelings and allow them to fully engage with life once more. Perhaps you feel stuck? Anxious, angry, depressed, or in emotional pain? Maybe you notice your relationships are unsatisfactory, they always follow the same pattern? Or maybe life, with all its demands, is just grinding you down? Spending some time exploring these issues with a trained counsellor can offer insight, clarity and relief.

I feel passionate about helping other women thrive. So, I typically work with women, who are looking to effect change in their lives. Over the years, I have worked with thousands of women, who felt stuck, with little or no control over their personal or professional lives. They reported feeling hopeless, frustrated, and tired of the status quo. Some, saw their identity no longer aligning to their values, or their purpose threatened by the natural order of things like children leaving, unworkable relationships, loss of loved ones, stress at work, or hormonal changes and even traumatic experiences that left them wondering...What Next?

There are many reasons people decide to engage with therapy. Perhaps there is a specific issue that you would like to address, or you may wish to explore patterns and ways of being that no longer serve you. You may feel overwhelmed by your emotions or even disconnected from them. Maybe you just need a confidential space, free from judgement, where you can be heard as you process what is on your mind. Whatever brings you to counselling, I will work to understand what it is like to be you and to walk in your shoes. I will support you as you deepen your self-awareness and perhaps consider changes that you would like to make.

At times we can struggle with our circumstances and relationships. This may result in feeling confused and overwhelmed. Traumas past and present impact upon our quality of life and coping mechanisms can fail or become unhelpful. Counselling allows some time and space to focus on your issues and it can provide insight and clarity. It's an opportunity for honest open communication, without the fear of judgement and negative repercussions. This self-exploration tends to aid growth and healing, ultimately resulting in change and acceptance. I support you rather than diagnose or label, being alongside you through life's challenges.

We all have times in our lives when we find it difficult to cope, causing us issues such as anxiety, depression, stress, feelings of emptiness, loneliness, anger and relationship problems. I offer a place to work out what is going for you, in a safe, non-judgmental and confidential space. Sometimes we are aware of issues that are causing our distress and sometimes not. Being able to work out exactly what is going on for each of us as an individual, can be the key to change.

I work relationally to help clients understand how past experiences and relationships might be impacting current difficulties. Therapy can help make changes to these often hard-wired patterns and facilitate the development of more healthy fulfilling relationships. By building a relationship based upon trust, empathy and acceptance therapy enables a greater awareness and understanding of how and where difficulties have arisen and provides the conditions for change to occur.

I'm an experienced integrative therapist and work flexibly and dynamically with adults, couples, families and trainee counsellors. Early relationships and life events may have shaken your ability to fully value yourself or others. You might be bereaved, struggling with a relationship, experiencing depression or anxiety. I'm objective and compassionate, offering support to connect with frightening or buried feelings. Letting go of strategies that no longer work for you, without pressure or expectation, can help you to find your own truth and a sense of who you really are.

I imagine that you are here because life seems particularly tough at the moment. Perhaps you are anxious about the future, or suffering with difficult memories from the past. Perhaps you have realised that the relationship patterns you have developed are no longer working for you and you would like to find a new way of connecting to your partner or others. Perhaps you need some practical guidance with a sex related problem. Wouldn't it be good if a trusted professional, who is also warm and 'real' could help you find a positive way forward?

I would say that an important element of analytic work is that it helps to build real internal strength; one that can enable you to know and accept yourself. For People who are able to make use of analytic work, it can provide translatable skills that help deal with ongoing difficulties, not just the ones that brought you to therapy. Analytic therapy can be short term, but tends to be relatively long term work, dealing with issues that have likely been problematic for many years.

Working with individuals and couples, online, I am an LGBTQ+ affirmative, trauma-informed, and fully BACP Accredited psychodynamic therapist. Therapy involves a joint inquiry into the underlying beliefs and habitual ways of being and seeing that we carry. Regular sessions provide a reflective, confidential space for self-exploration and support, in which to look together at any areas of concern to you. As we begin to make sense of troubling, confusing or conflicting feelings and experiences, it can become possible to discover greater ease, choice and fulfillment in the present.

Women's Issues Counsellors

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realised.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
