My name is Ella and I am a therapist based in the UK. You may be struggling with anxiety, social anxiety, stress, depression, overwhelm, feelings of loneliness, significant loss and grief. Maybe you are struggling with important relationships in your life. Perhaps your struggle is not that clear and you have a feeling that something isn't quite right. I can help. I have helped clients find confidence, clarity, understanding, self-esteem, a way to express themselves and find meaning in an increasingly demanding world. I also work with couples helping them to find ways to better communicate, to feel seen and heard by each other.

People come to therapy for lots of different reasons. You might be feeling anxious, depressed, stressed or unhappy, stuck or lost in life or in your relationships. Under pressure at work, not sure where your life is going? Maybe you feel as if the same patterns seem to keep repeating and causing hurt in your personal life and relationships, or you may have a crisis or specific problem you need to resolve or traumatic past experiences, such as abuse, bullying or bereavement. Everyone is different so whatever your own personal reasons for seeking therapy, I offer a safe and confidential place to talk and to achieve positive changes.

Most of my clients struggle with something they find severely distressing in their life, often to the point that they feel stuck and unable to live life the way they want to. Many times this is related to earlier trauma and attachment-related issues. I intend to create a safe space for you to unpack what is at the root of your distress and help you connect with your feelings, values, beliefs and your body. I have deep respect for what has gotten you this far as well as the patterns you want to change and the direction you want to shift your life into. This can be a path of liberation, empowerment and deep self-connection.

Are you struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, relationship, or sexuality issues? Do you feel stuck and lacking support? Do you feel overwhelmed by difficult situations or struggling with low self-esteem? Are you going through a life transition and finding it difficult to cope? Many of us may face hardships in life at some point and such times can be stressful, frightening, and lonely. Seeking help or support is not always easy. Talking to friends and family may be difficult, if not impossible as we may experience rejection, shame, guilt when we are most vulnerable.

Women's Issues Counsellors

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realised.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
