Often in life we get stuck in patterns which, though once useful ways of being and relating, have now outgrown their usefulness to us, perhaps beginning to get in our way even. Psychotherapy can offer both the space to express, grasp and understand these patterns and then the support and challenge to grow in ways which seem right for you. I am currently seeing clients in person or online. I draw on a range of sources to bring my curiosity to meet you as a whole person. I am interested in your thoughts, feelings, your actions and what may be going on in your body as well as what may emerge in the here and now of our
relationship
.

I work with a variety of people’s issues including anxiety, depression, trauma, and
relationship
issues and have counselled young people during my training as a college and young people counsellor with The Exchange in Swansea at Gower College I work mainly f2f and include guided meditations and an integrative holistic approach to my sessions.
Coming to therapy can seem like a big step. But in my experience with clients, it is usually the beginning of a liberating time when past and present concerns can be expressed and understood with emotions examined and transmuted. Learning how to accept and navigate difficult life situations can be really beneficial, as you discover what choices are available to you in how to handle difficult emotions and thought patterns. Many of our core beliefs were formed when we were young and not fully conscious of the choices we were making about our world. Therapy gives you the chance to look at yourself and your issues in new ways.

Hello, my name is David and thank you for taking the time to read my profile. The fact that you’re considering seeing a counsellor means that you’re unhappy with a part of your life, whether it be an unfulfilling
relationship
, an uncertainty about career or lifestyle choices, or thoughts and behaviours that inhibit your ability to lead the life that you once dared to imagine. The pandemic has also forced people to look again at their life and reappraise what they really want from it.

The reasons that people may seek therapy are very individual and personal - it may be due to emotional problems, anxiety, depression, substance use, early life experiences, trauma, or because of a feeling that life has somehow lost its balance. Yet many issues and problems are embedded within our wider social and cultural context. Adverse childhood experiences and other difficult or traumatic experiences later in life can have a profound effect on how we view ourselves, our
relationship
with others and the wider world, usually leading to a mixture of vulnerability as well as resilience. Therapies such as EMDR or CBT can help.

Our relationships are fundamental to our lives, whether that’s with our family, friends or colleagues. They can bring us comfort and also anguish. I believe in three things: 1 - That our relationships can be key to a leading a fulfilling life. 2 - That where we come from informs who we are, but does not necessarily determine where we end up. 3 - That we each need to express who we are without fear of judgement. I will work with you, using the counselling
relationship
to mirror important relationships in your life, so that we can more easily see patterns of behaviour that no longer serve you.

Couples Counselling
Does couples counseling work?
Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.
When should a couple seek counseling?
Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.
How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?
The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.
How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?
The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
