Hello, I’m Rebecca Wilson. A Counselling Psychologist based in Swansea. When I am not in my private practice, I work as a Community Psychologist within the NHS. I believe that the context in which we grow up and live in, shapes our sense of self and how we live our lives. I recognise the impact that life struggles and the impact that our social, relational and financial situation can have on our mental well-being. I am passionate about understanding each persons’ story and am keen to understand the link between our stories and our well-being.

Hi, I’m Mel — welcome to my page and thanks for stopping by. You might feel stuck in patterns of self-doubt, overthinking, or people-pleasing. Maybe you struggle with anxiety in relationships, constantly worrying about being “too much” or fearing abandonment. That relentless inner critic keeps telling you you're not good enough, and emotional walls make it hard to trust or open up. These struggles often stem from unresolved childhood experiences, shaping how you see yourself and relate to others. But you don’t have to carry this alone; there’s a way forward, and healing is possible.

By learning to understand what drives us, we are able to change and grow.... and most importantly, learn what to do when we get ‘stuck'. I recognise that the first steps in counselling are often not easy, so will make sure we go at a pace that suits you; therapy can be short or long term, we can decide this as we go along. I am a qualified psychotherapist, couple's therapist and fully trained clinical supervisor, offering a private space in my garden studio, where together we can explore whatever brings you to therapy. I trained in Emotion Focussed Therapy which works on the premise that our emotions guide everything we do.

As an Integrative Counsellor, I have the privilege of helping to support many clients with a range of life issues. Whether these challenges are related to anxiety and depression, bereavement or prolonged grief, anger, personal relationships and abuse or the ongoing effects of historical difficulties, to name just a few, my goal is to ensure that you feel safe and heard in a confidential, empathic and compassionate environment. It can be difficult to reach out and accept that you may benefit from external support. Vulnerability is not weakness, it is the most courageous thing that we can show to others.

Many people get to a point of feeling stuck or disconnected, as if something is holding them back from fully engaging with life. If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. I mainly work with LGBTQ+ individuals. Together, we’ll create a safe and supportive space where you can better understand your experiences, discover new ways to relate to yourself and others, and move towards a more authentic and fulfilling life.

Attachment-based Counsellors

Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?

Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.

What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?

Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.

How long does attachment-based therapy last?

Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioural Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.

Does attachment-based therapy work?

Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
