Having worked for more than 20 years in the voluntary sector and education, supporting people with their mental health and wellbeing, I have experience of working with a range of issues, from
anxiety
and depression to bereavement and trauma.
I am a qualified psychotherapist (and fully trained clinical supervisor of therapists), offering a private space in my garden studio, where together we can explore whatever brings you to therapy. By learning to understand what drives us, we are able to change and grow.... and most importantly, learn what to do when we get ‘stuck'. I recognise that the first steps in counselling are often not easy, so will make sure we go at a pace that suits you; therapy can be short or long term, we can decide this as we go along. I trained in Emotion Focussed Therapy which works on the premise that our emotions guide everything we do.

Hello, my name is David and thank you for taking the time to read my profile. The fact that you’re considering seeing a counsellor means that you’re unhappy with a part of your life, whether it be an unfulfilling relationship, an uncertainty about career or lifestyle choices, or thoughts and behaviours that inhibit your ability to lead the life that you once dared to imagine. The pandemic has also forced people to look again at their life and reappraise what they really want from it.

anxiety
, depression, domestic abuse, stress and work related issues.
As an experienced integrative counsellor I see clients come into therapy for many reasons from experiencing crisis, to feeling alone or feeling generally unhappy with their lives. Understanding the client need or goals allows me to use different approaches or techniques that are the most benefit to the client. As a counsellor I offer a safe non judgemental space allowing the client to explore and identify underlying causes and gain new insights into the way the client is feeling bringing about individual change and a more positive way of being.

I'm passionate about counselling because it has been both life-saving and life-changing for me. Since early childhood I had been anxious and depressed and received very little help until I reached 40, was bringing up 4 children and became very concerned about the effect my moods could be having on them. In counselling I began to experience hope, and was gradually shown how to observe my thought patterns, to look at how my childhood had affected me, and how to recover and change. I'm a different person now, as my husband and friends would tell you. Now I love to help others recover from depression and
anxiety
in particular.

I work with a variety of people’s issues including
anxiety
, depression, trauma, and relationship issues and have counselled young people during my training as a college and young people counsellor with The Exchange in Swansea at Gower College I work mainly f2f and include guided meditations and an integrative holistic approach to my sessions.
Coming to therapy can seem like a big step. But in my experience with clients, it is usually the beginning of a liberating time when past and present concerns can be expressed and understood with emotions examined and transmuted. Learning how to accept and navigate difficult life situations can be really beneficial, as you discover what choices are available to you in how to handle difficult emotions and thought patterns. Many of our core beliefs were formed when we were young and not fully conscious of the choices we were making about our world. Therapy gives you the chance to look at yourself and your issues in new ways.

You may be struggling with life and all it involves, overwhelmed by emotions like
anxiety
and anger, and desperately trying to manage but constantly losing your grip. Or you may be using coping strategies that used to work - food, alcohol, or other substances - but now don't, or it may be those coping strategies are actually causing you more problems, but you don't know how to change. You may find it difficult to speak to others about your anxieties and difficulties and you feel alone and isolated in your struggle, powerless to make any lasting change.

The reasons that people may seek therapy are very individual and personal - it may be due to emotional problems,
anxiety
, depression, substance use, early life experiences, trauma, or because of a feeling that life has somehow lost its balance. Yet many issues and problems are embedded within our wider social and cultural context. Adverse childhood experiences and other difficult or traumatic experiences later in life can have a profound effect on how we view ourselves, our relationship with others and the wider world, usually leading to a mixture of vulnerability as well as resilience. Therapies such as EMDR or CBT can help.

I practice person-centred and emotion-focused therapy and have experience of working with sudden bereavement,
anxiety
, depression, self-esteem, suicidal thoughts, trauma, and health-related emotional distress, with adults across the age range. Emotion-focused therapy can help to focus on feelings which overtake our lives, making us lose sight of what we want, or keeping us stuck in situations we would like to change. Through gentle exploration of our emotions in a safe environment, we may start to see clearly how our feelings determine our actions, how we can make sense of our emotions, and how we can manage them for peace of mind

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
