I truly believe that no matter who you are or where you are from, at some stage in your life you will experience difficulties and therapy can make all the difference. There are many issues that can feel overwhelming e.g. depression, anxiety , relationships to name but a few and I know it can feel quite scary taking that first step talking to someone you don't know. However, you will find that I am really easy to talk to, professional and have a wealth of knowledge and experience. My aim is to make a difference and have a positive impact on your well-being.

When we meet, I will bring to our relationship my experience and expertise in working with trauma, anxiety , depression, relationship issues and loss.
I have trained as an integrative counsellor, and believe that therapy can help us evolve from surviving to thriving. I became a counsellor for many reasons, but fundamentally because of the powerful way in which counselling can help you take back control of your life story; tomorrow does not have to be like yesterday. I can offer you a calm space to explore what feels safe to you until you are ready and I will not make assumptions about the individual struggles you are going through. I work with the full belief that it is possible to find a way through your experiences and re-gain that sense of who you are.

I am an experienced Humanistic counsellor and am passionate about the positive changes therapy can bring. Sometimes our lives become overwhelming, complicated and confusing and problems get bottled up. A skilled listener can help you explore your thoughts, behaviours and emotions to help gain understanding, insight and clarity. This can lead to more positive choices, renewed resilience and feeling more in control again. I believe that the counsellor/client relationship is at the heart of successful therapy, so I aim to establish a warm, trusting, safe and non-judgemental space where you feel confident to express your concerns.

I hold the belief in my practice that we all have what we need to overcome our inner struggles, but may need help to access those skills and see connections which were lost or jumbled in our unconscious, to "untangle the ball of yarn" as it were. Counselling offers the support of an impartial, empathic, congruent, supportive (while gently challenging) ear, without fear of judgment or that what you speak about will be repeated without your knowledge. Your confidentiality is key in the counselling relationship.

Having worked in the care profession all my life, my goal was always to help people to improve their lives. I completed my training as a counsellor some years ago and now work primarily in a volunteer capacity though I keep some time to work privately. My focus about helping people hasn't changed. I will want to listen carefully to you and what you want though some people take time to understand their needs and often have little idea how to go about it.

I work with both individuals and couples. The skill-sets and experience I offer draw off a variety of professional trainings such as Internal Family System (IFS) and Intimacy from the Inside Out (IFIO) . These approaches are known to bring about the transformative healing qualities and resources that exist inside people. These are therapies that makes difficult experiences possible, such as: trauma, phobia or anxiety . I am here to help people better relate with what humans experience, I’ve witnessed and learned this is evidently possible through therapy.

Anxiety Counsellors

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioural therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
