I work mainly with clients within a person centred framework, but also use tools drawn from Gestalt therapy and CBT amongst others.
Hello I am Cheryl Forrester a qualified counsellor with an MSc in Psychology. I can help you with a range of life challenging issues. I work in partnership with clients recognising that they have valuable life experience of their own situation which they bring with them to the counselling session. I believe life can be challenging at times and it is important to work with clients to enable them to develop their own personal tools such as emotional resilience to enable them to manage their own life situations in a way which is meaningful to them. I have an inclusive approach to clients which respects diversity.

Are trauma experiences getting in the way of living a life in line with your goals, beliefs, values, and desires? Does anxiety stop you from doing the things you want to do? Do flashbacks get in the way of functioning at home, work, or school? Have you been diagnosed with a health condition and you’re finding it difficult to adapt? Therapy helps you understand the cause of your symptoms and how to break the cycle. You will learn skills to help you manage these symptoms so that you can achieve other things in your life that are important to you. These might be working, having a family, or simply living trauma-response free.

If you’re reading this you must have determined you would like help to heal and resolve difficulties in your life. I have a wealth of experience working with adults and children who have endured severe trauma, mental ill health (anxiety, depression etc) and have guided them through the healing process. Trauma affects both brain and body, causing somatic pain and toxic stress. Abusive relationships leave there damage behind long after they have ended . I’m not a fixer and I don’t have a magic wand, however, I can help you untangle the confusion and find some much needed hope to help you reach your goal.

Some people have been lucky enough to have at least one person in their life who can listen to their problems and not be judgmental. Most people don't. As a Psychotherapist, I have very much enjoyed seeing the positive reaction and the "light bulb coming on" (that Aha! moment) when I give them the feedback that they need. As a former Educator, I rely a lot on Psychoeducation and talk therapy to help a person understand the "why" of certain behaviors and why they have found themselves in a current situation, thereby helping them move toward better mental health.

Are you looking to make a change to improve your health and well-being? Perhaps you have failed to make that change happen so far. Or, you may have no idea of what you need to change to feel fulfilled about your life but you recognise that something in it is not quite right? I understand that life’s challenges are unique and complex to all individuals and that making changes to improve your health and well-being is hard. It is also important to recognise that repeatedly engaging in behaviour that you know isn’t good for you, or sabotaging your own efforts to change, can be a sign of unprocessed emotion and underlying trauma.

“I can offer you a good listening ear. An emotionally warm, nurturing, safe, and secure place to be able to talk about what is happening to you, what is important to you, and what is concerning you that is keeping you “stuck” and not being able to move forward in your life. I can offer you a genuine, non-judgemental attitude allowing you, perhaps for the first time, to express and explore your past, your present, your future, and who your true self is, or will be, without fear of shame. I will be by your side as you go on a journey of personal development. To hold your map when feeling lost whilst you try, but sometimes fail.

My ideal client has autism or Asperger’s syndrome and is aged 3-100. My other ideal client is an individual aged 3-100 who is in a close relationship with someone that has Asperger’s/autism. I see clients in three venues: Corby & Wollaston in Northamptonshire and in Llandudno Junction in North Wales. I have counselled autistic individuals and their families for over 12 years. My practice is informed by my Masters in Autism/PGC in Asperger’s and also from a long relationship with an Asperger’s individual. I am also a mother to Asperger’s individuals. My experience and knowledge therefore is profound.

I draw from lots of approaches including cognitive behavioural therapy ( CBT ) and dialectal behaviour therapy (DBT) and also use tools from motivational interviewing, anxiety management, harm reduction and relapse prevention amongst others.
We all want to change something at some point in our lives – we become dissatisfied with jobs or relationships, our ways of coping become unhelpful (or harmful), we become tired of thinking poorly about ourselves and wish we could just enjoy life instead of worrying about the future or what other people think. Whatever the change is that you’re wanting to make, I am here to support and empower you to achieve it. I’ll do this by creating a safe, relaxed space where you feel comfortable to explore what’s going on for you without fear of any judgment. I’ll also always bring compassion, kindness and a sense of humour too!

I primarily use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy as a basic therapeutic foundation ( a form of CBT ), as well as EMDR.
Have you been struggling with anxiety or depression for some time now? Are the things that you use to manage your thoughts and feelings not working as well as they used to? Are you worried that you may be losing control of your life and that others around you are suffering because of it? Are you finding it hard to sleep because you cannot switch off your mind? Do you want to be be able to handle those difficult thoughts and feelings and be able to live again rather than just existing? If that sounds familiar, psychological therapy can help.

I combine both Cognitive Behavioural Therapy with Solution Focused Therapy. Both well-established therapy techniques share certain basic similarities by focusing on helping the client identify solutions while decreasing the emphasis on the past. While SFT emphasizes the importance of the present, CBT facilitates changes in negative thinking patterns that lead to pre-occupation with past problems. Effective combination of both therapies can enable clients to focus on the positive elements of their life while gaining new confidence to achieve life goals.

The ideal client is anyone who has realised the need for support with their mental health. There may be a variety of different needs, goals. There is no one size that fits all, that's why I aspire to tailor everyone's journey as per their specific requirements. I believe wholeheartedly in the effectiveness of talk therapy. The science behind the brain chemistry of the human brain and how it affects our behaviours is noteworthy and interesting. However, it is only part of the story. The use of anti-depressants, and anti-psychotic drugs in more severe cases, can help some people but these chemical interventions treat only the symptoms of depression, anxiety and feeling sad. My way of working together with you goes straight to the source. I validate every part of your experience of being human including body chemistry, behaviours, social dynamics, and if applicable, your spiritual dimension.

Due to recent storm damage to my office I am currently only working online, I hope to rectify this shortly. I work with a range of clients who are looking to gain a greater understanding of themselves and wish to work towards the best version of them. I believe we are each individuals, there is no one size fits all especially in therapy, we are all unique. I have worked across many areas including working with teens and adults experiencing anxiety, stress, OCD, low self esteem and behavioural challenges. I believe that no matter what age we are we can all face our individual challenges and enjoy helping clients move forward.

Most people come into therapy because they feel "stuck". Perhaps in a relationship, a work situation, or unable to move on from past experiences, or feeling trapped by unwanted thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Some people want the time and space to explore why, before feeling ready to consider making changes. Some people are keen to get on and take action. Some feel caught between what they think they ought to do, and what they want to do. Often there is another layer of thoughts and feelings on top: anxiety, guilt, self-criticism, hopelessness etc. Eventually, comes a time when outside support is usfeul to break the pattern.

Cognitive Behavioural (CBT) Counsellors

How does cognitive behavioural therapy work?

Cognitive behavioural therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario (catastrophizing) or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.

When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioural therapy?

It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioural therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.

How can I find a cognitive behavioural therapist for someone else?

To find a cognitive behavioural therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioural therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.

Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?

CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
