At certain life stages we may experience anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, feelings of a loss or meaningless, loss of direction or purpose, or difficulty with building meaningful relationships. I will work with you to identify what these symptoms mean and how they may be pointing you to discover a deeper sense of self. My approach is integrative and allows for self-discovery. My methodology offers focus, allowing you to explore and connect to a truer sense of who you are. I encourage you to develop a sense of curiosity to understand yourself more profoundly. We will work together, to support your needs.

It can be a very daunting experience trying to find a counsellor. You may have several questions and possibly not be sure if counselling is for you. Talking to a professional can help. My name is Inge, I am a qualified counsellor and I offer an empathetic space for you to explore what is causing you distress, so you can move through your counselling journey at a pace that is comfortable for you. I adopt a person led approach whereby I work with you by continually discussing how the direction your counselling journey is progressing and if it is having the desired effect you had hoped for.

I am a Clinical Psychologist working in the NHS with children, adolescents and families who are experiencing a wide range of difficulties, including; mental health, attachment and parenting. Sometimes therapy involves seeing the person on their own, and other times it can involve the wider family as well. Our sessions will start by getting to know you better, and what your main difficulties are at present, in the context of your life experiences. Helping you to understand why you are having such difficulties will help us to tailor our psychological intervention to your specific needs. I will be with you every step of the way.

Whatever you're going through in life counselling provides you with non-judgmental and empathic support. Being seen and heard goes a long way towards starting to feel better. Honest and open communication tends to bring insight and clarity. This promotes growth, which ultimately results in change and acceptance. Reflection can help to make long lasting positive changes to you, your relationships and your future. The space to unburden and review your coping strategies can improve confidence and self-worth. A confidential space also means there's no need to worry about the impact of opening up to those around you.

From the outside you are functioning, but inside you feel on edge or numb. Anxiety shows up as overthinking, panic, sleep issues, people pleasing, or a body that will not settle. You might be carrying trauma, grief, low mood, or relationship patterns that keep repeating. Intimacy may feel confusing, pressured, or loaded with shame, fear, pain, or disconnection. You want calm, confidence, and closeness. You want to understand what is happening in your body and mind, and to feel aligned with your faith and values.

If you are struggling with saying no and ending up pleasing everybody but yourself, feel trapped and incapable to get rid of worries and anxiety or just overwhelmed with your current life situation then perhaps you are not meeting some of your needs. I can help you with that.

My aim is to build a trusting and non-judgmental relationship that helps you to develop self-awareness to work through and reflect on any issues you might be experiencing.

Coming to therapy can feel like a big step. At least it did for me! Most people at different times in their lives face problems that may seem insurmountable, seem to be recurrent or seem rooted in their pasts. Being with someone who can give you the space and time to explore yourself, your issues and your emotions can help bring about change. Often, I think, we come to therapy in order to discover the true reason why we have come to therapy. The source of the issue is not always apparent but in the supportive and facilitated space of our therapy sessions, the agency and self-healing abilities we all possess can be stimulated.

Eating Disorders Counsellors
What happens in therapy for eating disorders?
In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviours, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behaviour affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?
Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counselling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioural disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?
The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behaviour, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?
Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognise they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?
Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behaviour has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
