As a qualified and experienced Art Psychotherapist, I work with children, young people (up to the age of 21), and their families in dyadic art therapy( parent/ carer and young person) and in 1-1 art therapy.
During art therapy sessions, you'll be guided to use art as a way to express, explore, understand and process your feelings and experiences. No artistic confidence or prior experience is needed. Art making is a way of expressing yourself both consciously and unconsciously and can work as a vehicle to help children communicate and process difficult feelings.

Art Psychotherapy is a form of psychotherapy which involves art making and conversation.
My name is Vicky and I am a highly empathic and professional psychotherapist. I am psychodynamically trained which means I can help you to explore how you have learnt to relate to the world, to others and how the world relates back to you. We often hold onto past or recent trauma and it shapes how we feel, think and behave, often resulting in unhealthy defences. I can help you to unravel this and be more at peace with the world. I have experience of helping clients living with psychosis, disordered eating, low self-esteem, bereavement, personality disorders, abusive relationships and learning difficulties to name just a few.

As an Art Psychotherapist I can work verbally, and with creative processes in the session.
Are you are looking to reach a deeper understanding of yourself, find meaning in life's twists and turns, and discover new ways to navigate difficulties rather than repeating old or self-limiting patterns? Psychotherapy with me offers an invitation to take seriously, without self-absorption, the meaning of challenges in your own life journey, and nurture the process of 'becoming who you are'. I emphasise the important therapeutic values of curiosity, compassion, and keeping a sense of humour close by.

Have things come to a point in your life where it just feels really difficult to carry on? Do you find that you are anxious, worrying over the future, and fretting about decisions that need to be made? Do your thoughts drift repeatedly into the past, perhaps returning you to trauma or disappointment? Would you really like to be listened to with care and attention? Perhaps it is not advise that you need, just the opportunity to share what you’re going through, and find ways to feel better, more resilient and more able to cope. Perhaps you just want to feel more contented and at peace.

Do you feel like you're wearing a mask and only those close to you, see the real 'you'? You find yourself constantly apologising and wondering what people think of you. Do you spend a lot of time preparing what to say in social situations or replaying an event over and over, considering how you came across? You now say "no" to things you want to do. You might also be neurodivergent and struggle to know if the feelings you experience are due to ADHD, autism or something else. All of this makes you feel low. You want things to change but you’re not sure where to begin and now your relationships, work, education are being affected.

Do you feel disconnected in your relationships? Are you running on empty, overwhelmed by grief, anxiety or responsibilities, that you barely remember what it feels like to be yourself, rested or alive? Feeling constantly on edge is a natural coping response which often interferes with daily life and relationships. With compassionate support this can change. I am passionate about supporting adults facing repeated relationship problems, unmet emotional needs and loneliness. Together we explore and honour emotions, such as anger, sadness, worry and fear rather than push them away. Clients often leave feeling lighter and more confident.

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioural therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
