Hello there! I'm Sam and for 20 years I've worked in mental health understanding why life can seem so hard going at times, and how very 'human' issues/ challenges such as fear, sadness, life, death and our reactions to them can be due to, or the cause of other issues (anything from anxiety and functioning problems to addiction and suicidal thoughts). By sitting down together and working out how to make it through the difficulties you're facing, big or small, I'm here to face it with you and help you find the courage to move forwards through honest, direct and safe talking therapy.

I am passionate about helping you to manage your mental well-being and believe there is a strong connection between the body and the mind. The effects of anxiety, depression, stress, and trauma can be physically felt as well as mentally and emotionally. I understand how overwhelming and debilitating it is to try and cope with daily living when carrying these feelings around with you and just wanting to feel well again. I offer a safe, non-judgmental space to help you work through and manage these feelings so that you can start to live your life again without this holding you back.

I can only imagine how hard it feels to reach out for help for yourself or your child; to want things to feel better and not know how to make it happen. This is what I can help you with. Maybe you or your child feel anxious all the time and just want to feel safe? Or perhaps you can't seem to get rid of that little voice inside that tells you you'll never be good enough? Maybe your child is struggling with understanding themselves and the world around them and you just want them to feel happy and safe? I understand that situations like these can feel overwhelming and I am passionate about helping people overcome them and feel better

Play is a child’s natural language and as a therapist I support children when they play out difficult or upsetting feelings or experiences. Play therapy provides emotional support and can help children make sense of feelings which are often confusing and frightening. Play therapy can also help children to understand friendships or relationships that may be tricky and enable them to manage conflict more easily. Therapy starts with a meeting with the adults around the child so that I can understand concerns and gain an insight into the child’s history and support system.

I love what the Humanistic Integrative Psychotherapy College (HIPC) says: "Humanistic Integrative Psychotherapy relies upon the importance of the relationship between the therapist and client to enable mind, body, feeling, and soul to come together as a whole." I know how vital the one-to-one relationship is in helping you re-discover or discover who you are for the first time and find your place in the world. My approach is relational, where we work together on the issues you want to look at co-creatively.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
