Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Counselling in Abergavenny
Sometimes our experiences, upbringing and relationships, work, matters of self worth, or a multitude of emotions and issues leave us feeling overwhelmed, stuck, isolated, unmotivated, or exhausted. I will support you in navigating your unique experience, developing deeper self-understanding, more spaciousness around your emotions and ways of being, fostering creative flexibility, and a clearer sense of 'you' and what feels meaningful to you. The therapeutic space we create together becomes a place where old patterns can be understood and new ways of being and transformative insight can emerge—without judgement or pressure.

My aim for setting up a therapy practice was to provide help to those who are struggling with life's challenges. Do you feel as though something in your life isn't right? Maybe you've found yourself at a crossroads, unsure of where to go next. You might want support with reaching a decision, or facing your past. You might be looking to address relational/behavioural patterns, or want someone to help you cope through a crisis. It might be none of those things. It could be difficult to explain, and others don't seem to understand:- all you know is that you don't want to feel like it anymore, and you want things to be different.

I offer therapy using a flexible mix of talking therapy, creative approaches like writing or art, and mindfulness.
You seem fine on the outside, but inside, it’s constant overthinking, self-doubt, and feeling like you don’t quite belong.
I work with people navigating anxiety, big life shifts, burnout, grief, or the weight of always being the “strong one".
Maybe you’ve grown up between cultures, moved countries, or spent years people-pleasing just to fit in.
Therapy with me is a space to slow down, feel what’s really there, and stop performing.
As someone who’s lived between worlds, I bring both lived experience and clinical training to help you make sense of it all and come home to yourself.

I'm passionate about counselling because it has been both life-saving and life-changing for me. Since early childhood I had been anxious and depressed and received very little help until I reached 40, was bringing up 4 children and became very concerned about the effect my moods could be having on them. In counselling I began to experience hope, and was gradually shown how to observe my thought patterns, to look at how my childhood had affected me, and how to recover and change. I'm a different person now, as my husband and friends would tell you. Now I love to help others recover from depression and anxiety in particular.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Counsellors
How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.
When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behaviour through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.
What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?
This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviours and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.
Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioural habits.
