Online Counselling for Wales

I am currently offering in person and online appointments.
I have trained as an integrative counsellor, and believe that therapy can help us evolve from surviving to thriving. I became a counsellor for many reasons, but fundamentally because of the powerful way in which counselling can help you take back control of your life story; tomorrow does not have to be like yesterday. I can offer you a calm space to explore what feels safe to you until you are ready and I will not make assumptions about the individual struggles you are going through. I work with the full belief that it is possible to find a way through your experiences and re-gain that sense of who you are.

Are trauma experiences getting in the way of living a life in line with your goals, beliefs, values, and desires? Does anxiety stop you from doing the things you want to do? Do flashbacks get in the way of functioning at home, work, or school? Have you been diagnosed with a health condition and you’re finding it difficult to adapt? Therapy helps you understand the cause of your symptoms and how to break the cycle. You will learn skills to help you manage these symptoms so that you can achieve other things in your life that are important to you. These might be working, having a family, or simply living trauma-response free.

Have things come to a point in your life where it just feels really difficult to carry on? Do you find that you are anxious, worrying over the future, and fretting about decisions that need to be made? Do your thoughts drift repeatedly into the past, perhaps returning you to trauma or disappointment? Would you really like to be listened to with care and attention? Perhaps it is not advise that you need, just the opportunity to share what you’re going through, and find ways to feel better, more resilient and more able to cope. Perhaps you just want to feel more contented and at peace.

Online only in Cardiff.
You are probably feeling very upset, alone and confused, maybe even ashamed and wondering if counselling could help? Everyone who comes to therapy has a unique set of issues but the underlying need to share the distress and be understood, is true for everyone. If you are struggling with parenting, postnatal depression, miscarriage or your identity during a life transition, you are not alone. I have lots of experience working with women (and men) who are struggling with life and want to feel better than they currently do. I also help younger people and teens who may have self esteem issues, feel sad, anxious or be self harming.

Overthinking and self-doubt are exhausting. You're tired of replaying conversations, second-guessing decisions and worrying about what others think. You know you put too much pressure on yourself, but it’s hard to stop. At work, you hesitate to speak up, worrying you’ll say the wrong thing. You struggle to set healthy boundaries without feeling guilty. You compare yourself to others and wonder why confidence comes so easily to them. Even when you’ve done all the ‘right’ things- you've probably read the books, listened to the podcasts, maybe even tried therapy - you still feel stuck, unsure and like you’re not quite good enough.

Clients say they enjoy the flexibility of online and telephone therapies.
Do you need a safe confidential place to speak openly, with someone neutral and non-judgemental? You may be looking to make some changes, or have a dilemma to talk through. Maybe you've lost a loved one or pet, feel isolated or stressed, or have a problem that's preventing you from moving forward. I work to understand things from your viewpoint, and to build a trusting therapeutic relationship where you feel comfortable enough to be yourself. I listen, understand, accept, and believe, and appreciate that talking about feelings is difficult. Being interactive means that you'll get much more than 'hmms' and 'uh-huhs' from me.

I currently offer sessions online or over the phone.
Maybe you lived up to other people's expectations for so long you don't know who the 'real You' is. You may be struggling to get out of bed because your cup has been empty for days or weeks now. Maybe you have been hurt by someone close to you and are struggling to put yourself back together again. You might find it difficult to connect with others and are afraid of not being accepted for who you are. Maybe you would like to change something in your life but don’t feel able to do this on your own. You might experience overwhelming feelings of sadness but can’t quite put your finger on where this is coming from.

I work online 1:1 on Thursday and Friday daytime, and some early evening slots.
Hi, I'm Deborah. I can help with anxiety, self-criticism, low mood, social and relationship difficulties, volatile emotions, life transitions, phobias, and habits you'd like to stop. I will listen carefully to you so that together we can understand exactly what has been going on for you. We'll identify what it is you want to change in your life and in yourself. Together, we'll set some goals and work on achieving those goals. We'll use a mix of therapeutic talk, different ways to explore the past and present, set out some experiments for you to undertake, alongside body work like relaxation or hypnosis if that is right for you.

I have space for clients in person at my practice in Uplands, Swansea or online.
Hi, I’m Bob, I’m a calm, straightforward person and I offer a supportive space to encourage you to meet your full potential, live your fullest life and ultimately be who you really are. Sometimes in life we develop patterns which, though once necessary ways of being, have now outgrown their original purpose and can begin to get in the way of us living a vibrant and authentic life. I’ll meet you as a real person and together we can build a genuine relationship where these patterns can be understood, ultimately giving you more choices over your life and a space to heal.

Is online therapy as effective as in-person?

Numerous studies suggest that online therapy can be as effective as in-person therapy. However, further research is needed to determine if online therapy provides the same benefits across all client populations. Individuals with severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, or those who may benefit from in-person check-ins, like those with eating disorders, may not experience the same level of benefit from online therapy. Nonetheless, the success of online therapy, much like in-person therapy, often hinges on the quality of the therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the client rather than the specific modality of therapy used.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of therapy conducted online?

One of the main advantages of online therapy is its convenience for both clients and therapists. It also allows clients who require specialised therapy to access a wider range of professionals than they could with only in-person sessions. Additionally, online therapy may be a more affordable option in some cases and often offers the same insurance benefits as in-person therapy. However, online therapy may not be suitable for everyone, especially those who value face-to-face interaction with a therapist. Therapists may find it more challenging to assess clients accurately in an online setting due to reduced nonverbal cues on camera. There is also the increased risk that disruptions caused by external factors, such as technology malfunctions, can hinder the therapy session. For these reasons, many therapists offer a "hybrid" therapeutic approach, alternating between seeing clients in-person and online.

Is online therapy suitable for children and adolescents?

Just like with adults, the accessibility and convenience of online therapy can greatly benefit children and adolescents. In fact, children and adolescents may be more accustomed to navigating online platforms than older adults, making online sessions feel more natural for them. Teens might also be interested in using additional online tools, such as therapist-recommended apps, as an adjunct to online therapy sessions. Apps for developing CBT skills, practicing mindfulness exercises, or tracking thoughts and moods can be helpful for teens receiving therapy. However, it's important to note that not all therapeutic modalities are well-suited to online therapy, especially those used with younger children. For example, play therapy, which helps younger children express their emotions, often requires in-person sessions to be fully effective.

Can I receive prescriptions and medication management with online therapy?

The ability for psychiatrists to prescribe medications through online therapy varies based on the medication and the states where the medical professional and client are located. While many prescribing regulations were relaxed during the COVID-19 pandemic, some states still enforce rules, especially concerning controlled substances, which may mandate an in-person visit before prescribing. Generally, however, medical professionals can prescribe non-controlled substances through online therapy sessions just as they do during in-person sessions.
