I specialise working with people who have experienced traumatic relationships, traumatic attachments, issues of abuse and neglect in a relationship - no matter how big or small this may feel. I became a therapist because I like people - I like to understand their stories and how that has brought them to where they are. When you are feeling stuck because of anxiety or depression it is usually pretty difficult to believe anyone would want to listen. Well I do. I want to help you discover and explore the events, thoughts, feelings, and patterns of behaviour that have made you feel trapped so that you can make changes. Imagine being able to see your friends, attend events, even just sleep, without anxious or self critical thoughts wearing you down. That is what therapy with me can offer.

Although I regularly work with clients of all ages and genders, the majority of my clients tend to be young men, who have unresolved feelings or experiences which are impacting on their daily lives. I work as an integrative counsellor, from a person-centred perspective. This means that you can bring whatever you wish to the session, while we work at your pace and depth. I employ theory and techniques from CBT, psychodynamic and other therapeutic philosophies which I feel may be useful. Where we start is not the important thing as ultimately, you will naturally discover the things that matter the most to you.

I started my counselling training over 12 years ago and have years of experience working with people who are striving to understand themselves and these complicated lives that we are all living. I will never get over how much courage it takes to reach out for help at a time of crisis and I am always blown away at the strength and resilience of the human mind. I believe that we all have the potential to grow & heal and that counselling works to facilitate this process. Counselling is for everyone. Not just those who may consider themselves to be in an extreme crisis. I treat each client as an individual working with your unique needs

Choosing a therapist can be a tricky task, there are just so many! Perhaps taking a moment to pause and check inwardly for a 'felt sense' about a potential match may help you decide. This experiential practice is known as 'focusing'. I frequently invite my clients to pause and check for a bodily felt sense as I believe talking about a problem is not always enough. My approach to psychotherapy is integrative, drawing on humanistic, cognitive (CBT) and Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS). I am also currently training in EMDR therapy.

"Having walked a certain path, as a Christian, my Faith in God and leaning on Him has been the greatest pillar I ever held on to experiencing my own post-traumatic growth. However, I value individual differences, respect, diversity, culture, integrity, honesty and ability to find your own path, grow, connect and build an enduring relationship. I firmly believe individuals can be empowered to find their own solutions. I am aware I might not have all the answers or solutions, but I could give one or two suggestions. I am happy to sit with people who find themselves in a dilemma, stuck in difficult and uncomfortable situations".

I have been working as a Counsellor for 9 years and have had experience working with a variety of different issues. I love to engage with people from all walks of life and understand that therapy can be a daunting prospect, so I try to create a warm and welcoming environment where you feel safe to share your story. If you are looking for somebody who can help you understand where your struggles come from, as well as help you to develop tools to manage you current feelings and behaviours, then we would work well together. If you have a Christian faith and wish to bring this into the therapy room, then you can feel safe doing so.

I’m an Integrative Counsellor working with adults, online and in-person in Central Manchester. My specialisms are anxiety, self-esteem and relationships, in all their forms. It may be that you find yourself people pleasing through fear of disagreement or rejection, or worrying that you aren’t a good enough partner, friend, etc. Perhaps you are stuck in behaviour patterns which lead to conflict with others, or that anxiety makes it difficult to enjoy social situations or progress at work. These are all natural things to struggle with and it can be difficult to know how you can feel, or do things, differently. Therapy can help.

I have two areas of specialism. One is working with adults, who are experiencing high levels of stress and anxiety. This could be in relation to your job, health or relationships with other people. The second is working with parents of young children, when parenthood becomes tricky for whatever reason, or when children struggle with anxiety or activities of daily living (such as behaviour, emotional regulation, social skills, sleep, toileting, etc.)

I know the initial thought of starting counselling can be a daunting one and you may feel anxious about taking the first step. That's why I offer an introductory session through the means of a free 20 minute phone call or another form of communication that can be agreed upon request. If you wish to go ahead then, at our first session, we will complete a referral form, the counselling contract - outlining what you can expect from me and how the sessions work. You will have time to consider what you need from me in order to feel comfortable in our work together. We will begin to consider what your hopes are for attending therapy.

Hello, I'm Amy. I recognise that life can sometimes be complex, confusing, and difficult. Our anxieties and worries can feel overwhelming, and have a real impact on our day to day experience, our relationships with others, and the way we see ourselves. I'm here to listen to you, warmly and without judgement, and to help you to develop an understanding of you are. Together we can explore ways in which we can make changes in order to relieve discomfort, make sense of how your history may have impacted you, and free you of any processes that don't serve you well. We will work on putting yourself at the centre of your narrative.

I strongly believe that the most important part of the therapeutic process is learning to be kinder to yourself. Change has to come from a place of self-compassion- you can't bully yourself into feeling happier! Yet so many of us, when we feel lost and overwhelmed, allow self-criticism and self-doubt to take over. We feel stuck and hopeless, and worse, we blame ourselves and feel ashamed. I offer a safe, supportive and non-judgmental space to help you explore these difficult feelings so you can make sense of them and begin to overcome them.

How can I find a therapist in Manchester?

Search for nearby therapists or counsellors by inputting your city, postcode, or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or postcode into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
