For some time now you might have been struggling to make sense of how you are feeling and wish to talk things through with a professional. This could relate to difficulties with your mood and some behaviours you are not happy with and want to explore and work on these. Perhaps this was because of a recent event, or something that is related to your early childhood experiences, or even a combination of different life circumstances. You may be thinking that despite already seeking help for some of the issues that you have been facing, you feel unfulfilled and think that something is missing in terms of healing.

Do you find yourself getting easily overwhelmed? Perhaps you are tired of having a busy brain that overthinks, overanalyses, and critiques everything you do. Possibly you’ve been told you’re too sensitive, over-emotional or too caring. Unforeseen change and uncertainty may make you anxious and after periods of socialising, you need alone time to recharge. This might mean you feel different, or boring, leading you to think negatively about yourself. Perhaps you outwardly appear very “together” or successful but hide-away the fact that life seems harder for you than it does for others, leaving you feeling like an imposter.

Therapy is not always easy, and can at times, feel distressing. Your experiences may be something that you have shut away or tried to ignore. Unfortunately the feelings and thoughts around these experiences do not go away and can often become or feel out of our control. It is important to note that we do not need to visit anything that feels too scary for you, and we can still work around your experiences without directly re-visiting them. This can be re-traumatising and this is not something we need to do in order for the work to be successful. On the other side of this I have seen many people find healing and acceptance.

I am Helen & I'm an Accredited Integrative Psychotherapist & Counsellor. I know that it takes a huge amount of courage to seek out counselling. I recognise that & will provide an authentic, non judgemental approach to exploring whatever it is you might bring to therapy. An integrated approach means I draw on a number of specific therapies that can treat each client in a variety of situations, rather than having a single approach. I believe a therapeutic relationship & trust are of key importance in therapy work & have a down to earth, but highly compassionate approach, often taking a trauma informed approach to counselling.

Hi, I'm Alanna. I'm an Art Psychotherapist. The therapy session is a time set aside for you to express yourself openly and freely so as to be able to have space to really get to know yourself better. I offer a non judgemental space where we can think and explore together whatever it is that feels present for you. My approach is Psychodynamic, this involves being curious about how the past shapes the way we experience ourselves now in the present, as well as in our relationships and our way of being in the world.

I am an integrative psychotherapist and work with individuals aged 18+ for both short-term and open-ended therapy. People seek therapy for different reasons. Often it is because they feel stuck, stressed, overwhelmed or hurt. You might be struggling with a relationship, coping with stress or hoping to change a behaviour that is not working for you. When things are difficult, a psychotherapist can support you and help you to grow in whichever way is right for you. I won't tell you what to do, but I will support you to find a way forward for yourself. I am accredited by the UKCP and a member of the BACP.

Trauma and PTSD Counsellors

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
