I specialise in EMDR therapy for PTSD/trauma work (see New You EMDR on Facebook).
You may have feelings of dissatisfaction and a sense that you are not getting all that you want from life. You may be finding that every day is a struggle with strong, even overwhelming, feelings of depression, anxiety, stress or anger. I believe we all strive to feel happier and more fulfilled than we currently are. We want to feel a connection with other people and to have a sense that we are leading meaningful, enjoyable lives - even when we feel at a loss as to how to achieve this. I help people overcome their difficulties to become happier, more psychologically healthy and experience an improved quality of life.

I work with clients who have depression, anxiety, panic, low self esteem, OCD, trauma, PTSD, addictions, Functional Neurological Disorders, chronic pain and chronic fatigue.
Choosing a professional to help you can be a stressful process. Many people have heard of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy but aren’t sure what it involves, and don’t know whether they need CBT, counselling or something else. That’s not a problem - I will provide an initial phone consultation to answer questions, discuss what you are looking for and establish whether CBT or counselling would be most beneficial for you. I specialise in neurodivergence, providing reports and letters for clients who are needing an ADHD referral via their GP, and providing specialised CBT and ACT for ADHD and emotional regulation problems.

I have over fifteen years of experience of working as a counsellor in Mental health and now as a Counselling Psychologist PhD (in training). I offer a calm safe space where together we can find clarity on what has brought you to seek counselling. My authentic, warm and inclusive approach helps to create a non-judgemental environment. At times it can be very confusing and frustrating when we can't make sense of our emotions and often feel stuck or overwhelmed, I work collaboratively with my clients to understand how they construe their inner reality and life experiences, which helps to promote clients’ wellbeing and healing.

People will come to therapy at different points in their life for different reasons. For some people, difficult emotions, distress or a stuck feeling may have developed over a period of time; for others a significant life experience may prompt the need for therapeutic support. Whatever your specific circumstances are, recognising the need for support is a positive step forward. I offer a gentle, empathetic approach, creating a safe place in which to explore the areas my clients wish to focus on.

Together we can explore what you feel ready and safe to share - whether these are current, buried or almost forgotten experiences. I will be at your side to listen; endeavouring to relate to your unique circumstances and way of being; facilitative of your change and growth process.

Trauma and PTSD Counsellors

When should I seek treatment for trauma?

Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.

How long does trauma therapy take?

Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.

What happens if trauma is left untreated?

Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.

Can PTSD come back after treatment?

It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
