You might be carrying a lot, maybe more than you’ve ever said out loud. You might be feeling anxious, on edge, or stuck in patterns that don’t make sense. Maybe you’ve been through things like domestic abuse, a difficult upbringing, or the emotional weight that can come with parenthood, and now you’re left wondering how to cope, and where to even start. You don’t need fixing, and you’re not looking for someone to tell you what to do. You just want space. Space to talk things through, feel what you need to feel, and not be judged for it.

We all have stages of struggles within our life and sometimes we need some additional support to help us become the best version of ourselves. I offer a calm, friendly, safe space to explore your issues. I work with both individuals from the age of 10 and offer couples counselling and family therapy. I have experienced through working and volunteering within the mental health sector that people need their situation to be approached at a sensitive pace, without judgment and to be shown compassion.

My approach is grounded in the belief that the therapeutic relationship is the foundation of meaningful change. Working pluralistically, I draw from various modalities as needed - including Gestalt, parts work, transactional analysis, and solution-focused approaches - always in service of what serves you best in the moment. Much of my work centers on the stories we tell ourselves and how these shape our experience. Whether you're dealing with addiction, attachment difficulties, anxiety, or simply trying to make sense of your place in the world, we'll work together to untangle unhelpful narratives and explore new possibilities.

Anxiety is tough, but I can help you cultivate a new, empowered relationship with it, giving you the freedom to live more authentically - in your relationships, work life and free time. Anxiety has many faces. Maybe you wake up with a knot in your stomach, worrying that something bad will happen; avoid social events because they are too uncomfortable; replay conversations in your head wishing you’d handled them better; find it hard to concentrate; under the weight of your churned-up feelings, you say things that put a strain on your relationships. How far back can you trace these uneasy feelings? Maybe all the way to your childhood?

Life isn’t always straightforward. We go through challenges, experience pain, & sometimes lose sight of who we are. I believe that everything we’ve been through shapes us & by reflecting on our experiences & relationships, we can begin to understand ourselves more deeply. With the right support, healing & growth are possible. As a person-centred counsellor, my focus is on you as a whole person. We all experience life in different ways & therapy isn’t a one-size-fits-all process. Some days it might feel like progress & other days like you’re treading water—that’s okay. Change isn’t always linear, but I’ll be here to support you.

You may be feeling anxious, disconnected, or stuck in repeating patterns that affect your relationships, confidence, or sense of self. Perhaps you’re juggling the demands of work, family, or change and finding it hard to stay grounded or connected. Life can feel overwhelming — even when things look fine from the outside. My clients often come wanting to understand themselves more deeply, strengthen relationships, manage stress, and move toward lasting confidence, connection, and balance.

I offer talking therapy grounded in the humanistic and integrative approach with person-centred therapy at its core. This means sessions focus on you as an unique individual, inviting freedom to adventure within and explore your world beyond the surface. A down to earth space for healing. Rooted in the belief that growth happens when we feel safe and seen, guided by compassion and curiosity. Working from a person-centred, trauma-informed perspective. This means you are always met with respect, empathy, and care — at your own pace. Our work might gently incorporate mindfulness, somatic awareness, through bottom-up processing.

My name is Jo and I am a qualified counsellor. I am interested in every client at every stage and transition of their life. Each client is unique. Your reasons for coming to counselling will be yours alone; your story will be unlike anybody else’s, and I will respect that. Life can sometimes be overwhelming. Our feelings about events and relationships – past, present and future – can be bewildering, painful, all-consuming. I will offer you confidential, accepting, empathetic support to resolve whatever brings you to therapy. You hold the answers; our work together will illuminate them.

You might be feeling stuck in overwhelming grief, weighed down by anxiety, or exhausted from constant self-doubt. Maybe you're struggling to maintain relationships, losing sleep to ruminating thoughts, or battling guilt over emotions that don't seem to be in your control. You just want relief. Counselling can support this.

I have worked with and supported individuals with a range of complex mental health difficulties for over twenty years, initially as a nurse and now as a qualified CBT therapist . Many of my clients have needed an alternative way to view their situation to 'free' them from the distress they have been experiencing, along with a tailored tool box of coping strategies which they can choose from to empower them to manage the challenging experience. I have helped adolescent & adults experiencing OCD, PTSD, psychosis and/or complex emotional/relational difficulties, where the intervention required has been stress/anxiety targeted.

As a man you may be experiencing confusion, stress or despair around your role and how to meet new expectations of emotional openness. Perhaps it feels like no one understands you and how hard you try to be a good person. Maybe you want to be less stressed and angry, enjoy some inner peace, and rekindle your spark for life again which was sucked out of you a long time ago. Perhaps you feel fear, shame or isolation, and just want to be confident and self-assured again. Or you may be a woman seeking to understand the behaviour of important men in your life.

Sometimes life can be too challenging, overwhelming, purpose becomes questionable or we are looking for answers as to who we actually are. When we reach a point where life gets even tougher, we just need another human being to be with us. I can share in your experiences whilst encouraging being more present in your life with more clarity and purpose. I am a warm, excepting, compassionate, non-judgmental person who has a desire to help you learn, explore your experiences & beliefs to gain a greater understanding of who you are & to lead towards a more fulfilling life with increased self-compassion, self-confidence and self-esteem.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

Counsellors and Psychotherapists listed in the directory are members of the main professional associations, mainly the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). Most Psychologists in the directory are accredited members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and/or are registered in the Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP).

Providers whose professional membership or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Given that professional memberships are not a statutory requirement for psychotherapists and counsellors in the UK, certain qualified professionals or organisations may choose not to maintain such memberships despite possessing the necessary qualifications. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counsellor?

Counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists can all provide counselling or talking therapy and have credentials and experience that enable them to do so in the UK. Psychologists have earned a degree in psychology and many are members of the British Psychological Society (BPS) and have completed a postgraduate qualification in a specialism. Counsellors and Psychotherapists are not required to have a psychology degree, but to belong to a professional organisation such as the BACP or UKCP, they are required to have completed a training course as well as clinical and supervision hours.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the UK could be between £30 - £60 when seeing a counsellor and £60 - £150 and up when seeing a clinical psychologist. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover some if not all of your sessions. You should contact your insurance provider to determine if they provide coverage for therapy sessions and to determine what, if any, requirements they might have in order for your sessions to be covered, such as a referral from your GP or medical specialist.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

If you are struggling to access therapy due to budget constraints, you could also consider public funded mental health services. The NHS Talking therapies programme offers free of charge counselling for common mental health problems like anxiety and depression. The service is available to anyone registered with a GP, though you do not necessarily need to be referred by your GP and can refer yourself directly to a Talking therapies service. The service will provide different solutions, including group and individual therapy, for a limited number of sessions which are generally up to six.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your postcode.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Therapists who are part of a professional organisation such as the BACP, the UKCP, or BPS are bound by an ethical framework that requires them to uphold a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship and only under specific circumstances, such as when there has been participation in a criminal act or act of terror, or if there is potential or known harm to the client or others, will a therapist be obligated to break the agreement. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed during the initial consultation.
