My name is Martina. I am an accredited Psychotherapy Practitioner. I offer Interpersonal Psychotherapy for adults and children. Interpersonal Psychotherapy helps people to overcome symptoms of low mood, depression by working on the relational difficulties that may be impacting how you feel. This could be when you have lost someone close to you or when you have experienced a significant change. It may be if you are in conflict with another person or perhaps your relationships feel unfulfilling or maintaining them is hard. We can work through these difficulties together.

Do you feel like past events are affecting how you cope with life today? Do you feel anger easily and sometimes feel guilty about it afterwards? Do you wish you'd stop the anxiety? Do you feel like everyone is looking at you? Some nights you might feel like you're not enough... Some nights you might feel like you don't know what enough is... Sometimes you just want to put yourself first but the guilt just hits you...

I work online with adult autistic Individuals and with Couples in the UK. I provide an accessible & compassionate service that reduces distress & enables people to address what is difficult. If we have not been understood and accepted we may develop ways of being and doing that do not support our well being. We keep our true selves hidden from others and whilst this protects us, it can cause much pain and limit us. With an understanding therapist we can trust, we begin to make sense of who we are, how we are and what has happened to us in our lives. We can be truer to ourselves and live with more confidence, ease and acceptance.

I work with a wide range of issues from stress, anxiety and anger to depression, loss/bereavement, suicidal thoughts, relationship issues, self esteem and confidence.
I imagine it's overwhelming reading all these blurbs and trying to figure out which one stands out for you, so I'll try to minimise the noise. Qualified therapist and supervisor, 12 years' full time experience, bloke, getting on a bit these days, sense of humour, friendly, down to earth, but with the wisdom that comes with age and experience. I will do my best to understand you and support you but I will also challenge you to get out of whatever is keeping you stuck when appropriate! I have a proven track record of reducing distress and suffering and helping people to understand themselves and life.

You have made it this far because you have realised that this issue is now causing you emotional or psychological pain.  You owe it to yourself to take the next step and go and reach out for help whether it be with myself or another therapist.  Don't let yourself down any longer,  I wish you well and know from my own experience a little more awareness can create in you the healing you ache for. I will provide a unique tailored therapy that is yours alone.

Feeling SAD, CONFUSED and/or ANGRY? Feeling stuck/trapped? What's the point? Nothing changes? I know the fears of opening up emotionally or mentally. I also know now of how beneficial it is for YOU. To have time to understand your 'self' so that YOU can process and heal, change YOUR future. It's empowering. I have studied for 6 years, to Masters level. Committed to my own personal development. Losing nearly three stone in weight (an emotional eater). Unattached from drinking 5 times a week to now occasionally socially or sometimes I just drink water and ice! Smoking and a fitter body is next. YOU are important! Take control back!

Do you struggle with the voice inside your head that tells you you're stupid, ugly, pretending to be someone you're not? Do you want to change this voice?. Through person-centred therapy, working with the issues my children were mirroring for me and offering myself compassion, working with my neurodivergence instead of rejecting it and shaming myself I managed to heal this and you can too. This is your time, I truly believe you can reach your full potential like I did with the conditions my own therapist provided, just like a flower I bloomed, you can too!

I work with people presenting with a variety of difficulties including stress, relationship difficulties, anger, depression, anxiety, PTSD, CPTSD & low self-esteem. All of these interfere with our ability to solve problems and express our potential. They limit our ability to enjoy our life fully. I use modalities such as Transactional Analysis & Internal Family Systems along with other effective interventions to empower you and help you heal and live your life more fully.  I work in a transparent way with you. My focus is on supporting you to achieve what you want to achieve and on creating maximum value for you going forward.

Are you stuck, finding life hard to manage or struggling with neurodiversity? Work with me to reconnect with your authentic self, the things that bring you joy and not get stuck on automatic pilot, playing parts that don't work any longer. You don't need to be unwell to benefit from psychosynthesis or mindfulness, although most people come to therapy when something gets stuck or unworkable in their lives. Whatever your reason to seek help, I believe in reconnecting you with what makes your heart sing.

As a therapist I would like the opportunity to bring hope into your life, whatever your situation and life experiences. Discovering compassion for yourself may seem like a million miles away and the world may seem a very dark place but therapy is a way of bringing some light in. It is a chance to gain insight into yourself, discover and understand different parts of yourself, find a way forward, working towards balance and peace of mind and as therapist I can be a companion on the journey. So it is not about me giving advice, it is about you finding your inner wisdom and allowing it to unfold, an opportunity to become the real you!

Suicidal Ideation Counsellors

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioural therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
