Hello; a warm welcome to my profile. Perhaps you are trying to change something in your life; perhaps you are wanting to give up old habits or create new ones. Maybe you are struggling with something, or perhaps you just want to take a look at your life and assess or reassess it. Together we can work out a way forward; by looking at and following your cues, which you may or may not be aware of right now, we can map a path that feels right for you. I truly believe that everyone carries their own answers within them; we just need to find out what they are!

I have 15 years experience in working with families and adolescents, around a variety of issues from personality clashes to self-harm, eating disorders, attachment issues, borderline personality behaviours, and attempted suicide.
I can work with you around family issues, teen problems, child behaviour, ASC issues, illness and disability. I will support, collaborate and try to make sense of what is going on. All things eventually pass - I will offer to weather the storm with you. I won’t be judging you or not taking you seriously. We will work together - and it will be work - but we will also aim to have fun and be creative in our work.

Life can be very challenging at times and it can be difficult to make sense of things and find a way forwards on our own. Therapy aims towards increasing our self-knowledge and attaining clarity over our feelings, intentions and tendencies. By becoming more aware of the challenges we experience, and how we respond to these, we also become more able to identify alternative ways of looking at them and addressing them. I offer a safe space to facilitate this exploration and promote insight and personal growth. Everyone is unique and so everything that is brought into therapy is treated with care, respect and confidentiality.

Therapy offers a private and sacred space to think, feel and experience your true self. It explores your needs and processes feelings as they arise, and from this comes a new clarity of awareness. I sometimes think of it as coming out of the dark woods and into the light. This transformation of the self takes place at first within the therapeutic relationship. Being listened to unfolds a discovery of new insights, which activates the development of inner strength, resilience, resolve, and purpose, as it gradually releases you from the felt wounds you have been carrying, such as anger, confusion, sadness, grief, regret or loss.

Sometimes in life we get stuck in patterns which, though once useful ways of being and relating, have now outgrown their usefulness to us, perhaps beginning to get in our way even. Psychotherapy can offer both the space to express, grasp and understand these patterns and then the support and challenge to grow in ways which seem right for you. I draw on a range of sources to bring my curiosity to meet you as a whole person. I am interested in your thoughts, your feelings, your actions and what may be going on in your body as well as what may emerge in the here and now of our relationship.

It doesn't matter when you bloom, it matters that you do. I see psychotherapy as a kind and safe space for you to be seen and heard. We all have a core goodness and ability to flourish in our lives. Sometimes we need a little help to find our way.

Life brings many challenges and it is understandable that at times we might look for support in facing them. As a therapist my role is to provide space and guidance to help you on your journey of self discovery to enable you to examine your life and make new, meaningful choices within it. I offer a chance to reflect on the difficulties you are experiencing with someone from outside your day-to-day life. Together we can explore your situation in a way that leads to fresh perspectives and perhaps a new understanding of yourself. Therapy isn’t about giving you solutions or advice but rather empowering you to make your own changes.

We all experience difficulties at one time or another. It could be that our relationships aren’t all we'd like them to be. Or perhaps we feel anxious, depressed, lonely, or we’re grieving a loss. Perhaps we behave in ways that we'd rather not, or that we don't understand. Or maybe life has lost its meaning, we've lost our sense of direction, feel stuck, or just don't know who we are any more. Counselling offers a safe, confidential space in which to explore such issues in relationship with someone who is skilled, non-judgemental, and really there for you. A space in which to come to terms with things, and allow them to change.

Coming for counselling for the first time can be a bit daunting. You don't know what to expect, or how it might be able to help you, but I hope to provide a safe and trusting environment where you will be able to feel supported to bring whatever you need to to the therapy session, and to know that you will be fully listened to and accepted. You may be going through a difficult time in your life and need to find your way through, or you may be looking at having longer term therapy where you look deeper into exploring issues from the past that still affect you, in order that you can live a happier and more fulfilling life.

As a therapist I would like the opportunity to bring hope into your life, whatever your situation and life experiences. Discovering compassion for yourself may seem like a million miles away and the world may seem a very dark place but therapy is a way of bringing some light in. It is a chance to gain insight into yourself, discover and understand different parts of yourself, find a way forward, working towards balance and peace of mind and as therapist I can be a companion on the journey. So it is not about me giving advice, it is about you finding your inner wisdom and allowing it to unfold, an opportunity to become the real you!

Suicidal Ideation Counsellors

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioural therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
