She works clinically in the NHS treating substance use disorder and co-occurring mental health disorders.
Gemma believes that two of the most important elements to effective psychological treatment is feeling safe and being able to trust your therapist. Therefore, her priority is to offer a therapeutic approach and space that remains patient-centred, warm and non-judgemental throughout your treatment with her. She will work collaboratively with you to understand your specific needs, your current difficulties and what keeps these difficulties going. Drawing on your strengths and the current evidence-base to help design a treatment plan that creates meaningful change and meets your specific goals.

Hello, my name is Austin and I work as an integrative therapist worldwide via internet platforms including Skype and Zoom. I’ve received lots of therapy over the years when I have been struggling to cope with difficult situations and also when seeking to understand myself a bit better, it really helped. If you are going through a similar stage in life and are looking for someone to talk to in complete confidence, without judgment and at a pace that suits you then I can help.

I am great at supporting people to grow to be the best, most fully functioning version of themselves. The barrier to this is unique to you. You may have a difficult past, problems in the present or fear about the future. I know you'll need to feel safe to speak about deep feelings and it can take time for this trust to develop. It will help if you are willing to be kind to yourself and to work with me to find a way to say the things that feel most difficult or scary. It can be useful to try to be curious about yourself, to notice and name thoughts and feelings as they arise, I will listen without judgment.

Hello and welcome. My name is Katherine Coates and I am a qualified Person Centred therapist. My journey to become a qualified counsellor started after I entered therapy myself so am well aware of how terrifying taking the first steps in asking for help can be. Therefore, I aim to offer a safe space where you feel accepted and valued enough that you can reveal your vulnerabilities without fear of judgement.

I firmly believe that we are fundamentally relational beings, ones that need security, understanding & care above all else. Real change comes not from trying to fix thinking patterns, self-concepts or the past, but in shifting relational dynamics in the here and now and finding new ways of being with another. This is what I focus on in therapy with my clients, and I draw on my background and experience in modern relational psychoanalysis, developmental theory, and in depth study of phenomenology & existential philosophy to look at what emerges and how that can inform meaningful change in your life.

The people I work with come from dysfunctional families where their needs, physical or emotional, were neglected or abused. This may result in addictions, and relationships difficulties. Codependents might try to support another or others while lacking the support they themselves need. A client wrote about our work together: "Yveline really helped me look at things that were holding me back in my life, & in a supportive way, helped me process them and understand how they impacted my life. I didn't know how much I needed this till I made a breakthrough and things made sense. I feel much better, with a clearer vision of my future."

Welcome. In these uncertain times we may experience heightened anxiety and fear. Old issues may surface. There's more pressure on relationships. I've worked with clients on different video platforms for years both locally and internationally. As a therapist, I seek to be a companion to you when you face a challenge, hardship, or creative block. I feel honoured to have the opportunity to accompany you when you explore these places and search for meaning, wellbeing and new strength

Do you feel like you live in a world that doesn’t accept who you are? A dear friend of mine once summed up this feeling beautifully: “Being LGBTIQ+ is not my issue, it’s living in a world where others take issue with me being LGBTIQ+”. When we live in a society that does not see or respect our difference we internalize a lot of messages and beliefs about who we should, or should not, be. Trying to shape ourselves into an image that doesn’t fit isn’t just exhausting - it’s traumatizing! Hi, my name is Gavin and I identify as a gender non-conforming Queer person.

Substance Use Counsellors

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counsellors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
