You feel stuck and unsure about the way ahead. You experience overwhelming feelings when you need to take a decision. Your sleep is disturbed or you fall asleep when awake. You burst into tears too quickly or too slowly. You experience relational challenges with your family/friends or at work. You desire to talk about yourself to better understand who you want /don’t want to be. This list is endless as varied are the reasons leading people to therapy. My priority is to listen to clients, to meet them in their life journey. We define together the steps ahead so that I can support them in finding what they want from therapy.

The interplay of mind and body is also central to my broader work with anxiety, anger, depression, eating and sleep disturbances, self esteem, body image and shame.
I am one of a small number of practitioners in the UK who is dually qualified as a chartered psychologist and a sex therapist. My clients may seek help for a specific sexual difficulty such as desire or arousal concerns; or may experience broader distress which also manifests in their sexual and relational world such as low self esteem or perfectionism.

I’m interested in what works. For you. So I take a pluralistic, integrative approach and don’t limit myself to one particular way of working. Whether you’re seeing me for counselling, schema-based therapy or psychosexual therapy, I'll tailor my approach to suit your needs. And it’s the relationship between you and I which will be central to the work. Because I’m not a friend, colleague or family member, you can think the unthinkable and speak the unspeakable in a judgement-free space. You can rely on me to be honest with you, and bring into your awareness your blind spots, and things on the edge of your awareness you might missing.

I believe that we tend to access therapy when it’s no longer possible for us to travel alone on our journey, hidden from ourselves and others, stuck in familiar and/or unfamiliar patterns that can no longer contain us, and when the way in which we are relating (or not relating) to ourselves, others and the world around us, is no longer making us feel fully alive. Something tells us it's time to look inwards. Looking inwards can feel daunting but it is necessary in order to instigate meaningful and lasting changes ( both external and internal ).

Sometimes life can feel overwhelming and hard to handle. I provide a space to talk through the things that are making you feel anxious, sad, stressed or perhaps a bit lost. Setting aside time to focus on yourself and talk about the things that are causing you distress can really help to bring new perspectives and ease some of the anxieties that can hold you back from living in a happy and fulfilled way. I aim to work with you through some of these things to help bring clarity and insight, which in turn can help improve how you feel day to day and allow you to take charge of who you are and how you navigate the world.

Sleep or Insomnia Counsellors

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
