I see clients (and supervisees) from all backgrounds and specialise in working with men, or women seeking to better understand difficult relationships with men. I work with many issues including stress, feeling sad, low self-esteem, loss and relationship difficulties. My clients often want to change something about themselves and need a place to feel comfortable, share their emotions and better understand their needs. Articulating emotions and needs can be a struggle at first for some and I am experienced in helping clients to open up over time. My work is with individual clients online or in person, both short and long term.

It can be hard to reach out for professional support. Counselling Connection has designed its service to connect you to a small team of qualified therapists who may work in different ways but all have the same goal: to support you on your journey. If you don't "click" with the first counsellor you see, you are encouraged to meet with another member of our team so that you don't have to go back to square one in your search for a counsellor.

I am a fully qualified integrative counsellor who has worked within the public sector and with private clients over a number of years. I use a combined approach to psychotherapy as I believe that there is not one single approach that can successfully treat each client in all situations. I am an experienced warm and compassionate Practitioner and believe that the quality of the relationship between Therapist and Client is fundamental. I offer a safe and confidential space, where together, we can explore areas which matter to you, so you can make appropriate changes, feel in control of your life and develop through in-depth sessions.

I have worked with and supported individuals with a range of complex mental health difficulties for over twenty years, initially as a nurse and more recently as a qualified CBT therapist . Many of my clients have needed an alternative way to view their situation to 'free' them from the distress they have been experiencing, along with a tailored tool box of coping strategies which they can choose from to empower them to manage the challenging experience. I have helped adolescent & adults experiencing psychosis and/or complex emotional/relational difficulties, where the intervention required has been stress/anxiety targeted.

The most important thing first: No matter what place you’re in - there is hope for change and for things to get better. You may be reading this feeling vulnerable, disempowered, dejected, fearing disappointment or simply too overwhelmed to know how you feel. I'll meet you wherever you are and with whatever you bring and we can walk through your confusion and distress together. I've had the privilege of working with a diverse range of people with an equally diverse range of individual challenges. Spending time exploring your challenges can bring clarity, empower you to break with old patterns and help you find a positive way forward.

Throughout our lives we may encounter challenging experiences. We may feel lost and lack the guidance and clarity to assist in making difficult choices. We may struggle to deal with the affliction of loss or bereavement. We may find it difficult to understand the sensations and emotions attached to trauma and relational conflicts. We may be unsure of our identity and how we fit within the world.

My name is Rachel. Share your burdens with me, be accepted and listened to, ease tensions, stress, anxiety and feel less sad. I can help you understand why you feel the way you do and discover solutions that enable you to make positive change. You will find ways to reset and self care, improve your confidence and self-esteem. I am a trained Outdoor Therapist based in Saltash at Churchtown Farm Nature Reserve and the Rame Peninsula at Mount Edgcumbe Country Park. Being in the open air is more freeing than sitting indoors. Moving the body enables us to release tensions and it will stimulate new thoughts that encourage change.

The therapeutic relationship is a place where two human beings can connect on a deeper level to what we may experience in some aspects of day-to-day life, and to really begin to unpick the challenges that you may be experiencing. The chance to sit with another person, to talk, be free from judgments, in a safe and non-threatening environment can be truly life changing. It is an opportunity to feel seen, heard and understood, without the other person having an agenda for how they would like you to be. As well as my work online I am able to see clients face to face at Horizons Counselling service in Plymouth.

Most of the people I have worked with have been struggling with managing their emotions and or balancing and calming their nervous system due to anxiety and depression. These people have experienced a trauma at some point in their lives and are often battling with their own anger, relationship difficulties, addictions, disease and chronic pain. Clients are usually drawn to work with me because they are ready for 'change' and want to move away from going over and over what happened in the past, and move more towards how they can make concrete changes in the here and now.

Life can be joyful but it can also be incredibly stressful and challenging. I don’t believe any of us can navigate life without experiencing difficult and painful life events. As with our physical health, maintaining our mental health and wellbeing is a lifelong commitment. Given the right set of circumstances any of us could experience mental health difficulties. We can experience traumas and adverse life events which can significantly impact our mental health and lives. There are so many factors that can influence how we are thinking, feeling and behaving, causing us to feel unwell and overwhelmed & in need of help and support.

I am an experienced counsellor based in Calstock, Cornwall. I provide one-to-one counselling to help people find their way through at times of distress. I have worked with many issues such as depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, self injury, shame, guilt and relationship problems along with many other difficult emotional issues. Counselling can help us gain an understanding of ourselves; how we behave and how our past experiences effect who we are today. Explaining our thoughts and feelings can help us understand our distress, gain empowerment, build confidence and help us deal with the challenges life throws at us.

Sleep or Insomnia Counsellors

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
