I have a deep understanding of childhood sexual abuse and trauma originating in childhood.
A warm welcome to you. As a humanistic counsellor, my focus is to support you in re-discovering your innate sense of goodness and wholeness. Whether your troubles are underpinned by trauma or depression, our work together can build an understanding of who you are and what you need in order to find the best direction for yourself. I am also a trainee Gestalt Psychotherapist and my focus is embedded in here and now experiences. The Gestalt (roughly translated into 'Whole') approach is often helpful in grounding ourselves in 'what is' and provides a slowing down that offers space to move beyond a fixed way of being.

I specialise in working with domestic abuse and sexual trauma, both recent and historic, including childhood sexual abuse. I also have experience in a range of other areas including depression and anxiety, self-harm, relationship difficulties and emotional regulation. Therapy can also support less specific concerns such as general low mood or lack of motivation, and be used to compliment a pro-active attitude towards greater wellbeing and self-care.

I have an interest in working with adult survivors of child neglect or abuse, as well as issues such as domestic violence and sexual abuse.
Most of us experience feelings of sadness, loss, frustration, anger and stress at some time in our lives. It can be extremely difficult to express, understand and resolve these feelings when we are emotionally distressed. It may also be difficult to share some issues with family and friends for fear of being judged or misunderstood. I am here to offer you an empathic and non-judgmental ear. I am a highly experienced psychotherapist, offering a safe, calm and supportive space for you to work through those experiences and feelings, which are preventing you from leading a happy and fulfilling life.

Alongside my work at PLACE2TALK, I also work as a counsellor at STARS, a specialised Sexual Trauma Agency in Dorset, where I provide support to clients who have experienced recent sexual assault, childhood sexual abuse or domestic violence.
Life can be messy and rarely ever turns out just the way we’d hoped or planned. Do you feel ‘stuck’ in life? In a relationship or in your work life. Maybe you have been signed off from work, college or university with anxiety or stress. Perhaps feeling low and depressed is preventing you from enjoying the ‘sunshine‘ moments of your life. Shame is a common theme. It is associated with negative emotions, such as anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. I can work with you to help you navigate the difficulties that are causing emotional and mental suffering and support you as you discover a more fulfilled and contented life.

Do you feel overwhelmed by your feelings? Do they impact on your confidence and day-to-day life? Or perhaps you have experienced painful losses, abuse or traumatic events that are affecting you? Do you have patterns of behaviour that no longer feel beneficial to you? Sometimes we think and act in certain ways that function to protect and preserve us. These have felt necessary in the past, but are no longer useful and can instead impact negatively on our life.

I use EMDR to help people process trauma (PTSD and C-PTSD). My clients are typically living with a range of issues - flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, night terrors, palpitations, catastrophising, insomnia, feelings of isolation, irritability and guilt. They also very often experience 'triggering' - making everyday life, work and relationships difficult. Additionally, they may not remember aspects of what has happened to them and others ('dissociation'.) My clients come to me for EMDR to enable them to reduce the disturbance levels in their nervous systems and hence, get on with their lives.

I like to work with clients who are aware that they want to make changes in their lives: they may not yet know what the change looks like, but are willing to explore options in a compassionate and supportive environment. They are interested to learn more about themselves and others; willing to accept that they many need to let go of some old patterns of thinking, feeling and doing to live the life they want for themselves. They are committed to their personal growth and willing to meet regularly over Zoom or in person, to achieve their goals. Goals will be agreed each session to ensure focus and a sense of achievement for us both

I understand the prospect of counselling can seem daunting, however talking to a counsellor is the first step towards change. You don't have to struggle alone.

Sexual Abuse Counsellors

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
