If you are experiencing anxiety, having difficulty adapting to the ever-changing demands of the world, or finding it hard to express yourself, you don't have to cope alone. I'm Ian Wootton, and I set up Flexible Mind Psychology to provide specialist therapy for those who feel disconnected, even when they are around lots of people, or who feel stuck in their rigid ways of thinking or behaving. If you are someone who is often assumed to be coping perfectly well, who doesn’t like to make a fuss, and who appears to be okay on the outside but is actually struggling on the inside, get in touch - I can help you to adapt and reconnect.

Are you looking to make sense of things or heal from painful events? You might be experiencing intense feelings, unwanted thoughts or images, or struggling in your parenting, relationships or work. Perhaps your coping strategies are getting in the way of the life you want to lead. You are not alone. I see psychological distress as our brains doing their best to cope with a challenging world. Together we can understand why your brain and body is coping in this way and reach out to those parts of you that are struggling.

Hello, I’m Ben, a psychotherapist based in York, and I support people to resolve life and relationship difficulties. If you’ve ever felt trapped, possibly disliking who you have become and feeling others blaming you too; we can work together to make sense of how you came to be the person that you are today, and how to make positive changes in your life- to make you more you. Often we feel life’s pressures, or that there is some is just ‘wrong’ but we are unsure of what ‘it’ is, we can resolve the it - to make you more you. I support clients with childhood trauma, complex diagnosis, as well as seemly day to day issues.

Welcome to my page! I am a person-centred therapist, meaning that I do not offer direct advice or instruction, but that I will help you to explore your needs from your perspective. I provide a compassionate, non-judgmental, and collaborative space where together we can explore the issues affecting you in your life, at your own pace. The purpose of my work is not to "fix", but to increase your understanding and awareness, and to help you to accept yourself and your needs on your own terms.

Are you feeling stuck, unheard, unworthy? Are you living your best life, or is something holding you back? Life is challenging at times. Many things can trigger our internal critic, making us believe we are 'less than’ or are failing. We dwell in the past, worrying about mistakes, reliving painful events, remembering unhealthy relationships. It can feel impossible to see a way forward. There are many human emotions - are yours feeling balanced, or are one or two overwhelming the others?

Self-Harming Counsellors

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behaviour therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
