Specialising in Men's mental health. I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I work with all adults and young people who come to me with a diverse range of presenting issues, with a particular emphasis on addressing issues such as anxiety, depression, and relationship issues. My belief rests on the notion that every person possesses an innate drive to achieve their utmost potential, to grow, and to become the finest version of themselves. This belief serves as a guiding principle as I strive to create a confidential, supportive, empathic, and non-judgemental environment.

Clients I see and work with bring a range of relational difficulties and traumas which present in very individual ways. Parents often feel judged when they are doing the best they can under difficult circumstances, and trust in others becomes unsafe. Children may struggle with anxiety, behavioural difficulties, withdraw, not trusting adults and feel isolated. Children want to feel safe and secure in their world with their family to thrive and flourish, and parents want to provide these for their children, but can find they need some support during difficult and challenging times in their lives.

I believe we are all products of our upbringing and experiences. Sometimes, this can lead to a variety of struggles with issues such as anxiety, low self esteem, confusion and not feeling good in relationships. I can work with you to unravel what this is all about and help you find new ways of coping and moving forwards. We can talk or use creative methods to facilitate this discovery process. I work with young people, adults and couples for short or long term one to one sessions which are all driven by you and on your terms. I offer a free, initial meeting so you can decide if I am the right Counsellor for you.

Hi I’m Diana. Thank you for taking the time to look at my profile. Are you struggling and feel as if no one ‘gets’ it? Perhaps you are feeling overwhelmed or just lost. Sometimes, life throws challenges at us when we least expect them and are least prepared for the impact they may have on our lives. I can help you to make sense of these experiences and emotions. By offering you space to explore your thoughts we can work together to help you move forward. We can find ways to overcome negative thoughts and to stop you feeling stuck.

Our past need not define our future. If you feel stuck, unhappy and are struggling to change, I can help. When in life we encounter distressing experiences our whole focus may be on surviving them. We can form patterns of thoughts and behaviour which help us cope, but which often continue unnoticed into our later lives. When these patterns of behaviour and relating remain our defaults, they may become obstacles to our future wellbeing. I offer a safe means to explore your thoughts and behaviours, to identify those which are unhelpful and to change, leaving behind obsolete past beliefs and behaviours to live the life you choose.

Life always throws us difficult stuff to deal with; it wouldn’t be life without it. Sometimes we can shrug these things off, yet at other times they can have an extremely debilitating effect upon us. Sometimes things happen and we bury them, they remain hidden but still exert a force upon us and our behaviour. They can influence us in ways that we would rather they didn’t. Sometimes these things come roaring back at us, out of the blue, unbidden and unwelcome. We all pass through stages in our life where we question everything around us, our relationships, our work, our behaviour and ultimately ourselves.

I offer Counselling services, and Supervision for other Counselling professionals, virtually or face to face. During all of our lives we have times when we find that life is harder to process, events are challenging to tolerate and find a path through. These are the times where we most need a safe place to talk – and these are also the times when it’s most difficult to reach out. I'm a compassionate, experienced professional, and can help you to manage your anxiety and overcome past truma. I am also experienced helping those struggling with sex or addiction issues, working with STOPSO and ATSAC

My name is Harriet Schofield and I really believe in the potential for counselling to change lives. More than I in 4 people access counselling or psychotherapy at some point in their lives (BACP, 2014), therefore if you are unhappy or life feels like a struggle, you are not alone. I understand how frightening it can be to feel stuck and like there is no way out, but I want you to know that if you are ready for things to change, then they can, however difficult things are feeling now.

I am a counsellor who focusses on the value of the therapeutic relationship and how trust and safety can support you and help you to validate and understand your experience without judgement. I work as an equine and nature assisted somatic trauma therapist and find it very helpful to combine this work with gentle trauma sensitive yoga practices to help regulate the nervous system. I have trained with Equusoma which brings elements of somatic experiencing into the experience of equine connection, I am also training in Somatic Experiencing. The work I do helps to integrate and process the experience of the mind and the body.

My belief is we each have within ourselves the innate capacity to bring about the growth and change we long for: it simply needs rediscovering and nurturing for our way forward to emerge. What I can offer is an attentive environment and the kind of supportive relationship that nurtures that seed within. We all experience life events which can be disturbing, distressing, troubling, making our lives feel difficult or off balance: in providing a supported space- set apart from the routine of life- I offer the opportunity to explore and reflect upon whatever is causing you concern: together.

Self-Harming Counsellors

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behaviour therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
