Hello! I'm Rebecca, a fully qualified counsellor based in Motherwell. I work with individuals and couples, both online and in person. Counselling is a private space for you to talk about whatever is on your mind. To sit with someone who is professionally trained, not just to listen, but to help you sort through how you have been feeling and hopefully feel better about yourself. Life is often unpredictable, busy and complicated and sometimes we can lose sight of who we are or what we want. If you are feeling lost, stuck or unfulfilled, I'm here to help you rediscover what it means to be you.

I believe that one of the bravest steps a person can take is to develop a deeper understanding of themselves and their life experiences. Therapy offers a space to explore your story with curiosity and compassion, and to discover new ways of relating to yourself and the world around you, exploring difficult thoughts, emotions, & behaviours. My aim is to support you in making meaningful changes at a pace that feels right for you, while fostering greater self-awareness and emotional wellbeing, tailoring therapy to your individual needs.

I work with you, the one who appears capable, independent and successful yet feels lost, disconnected, or emotionally unfulfilled. Many of my clients are living between fragmented friendship groups, countries, cultures or identities, carrying a deep sense of loneliness, restlessness or not quite belonging anywhere. Outwardly, they are coping, achieving and moving forward, whilst inwardly questioning who they really are, where they belong and, whether the life they are living truly reflects what matters to them or feels meaningful to inhabit. Many seek me out when success no longer quietens these existential doubts.

You might be feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or simply exhausted from holding everything together. Maybe anxiety is making everyday situations feel harder than they should, or low mood is leaving you unmotivated and disconnected. Deep down, you want to feel more in control, more confident, and more like yourself again — but you’re not sure where to start. What makes my approach different is how down-to-earth and human it is. I bring warmth, honesty, and practical tools to each session, creating a space where you can show up exactly as you are — no pressure to perform or have it all figured out.

Diary Open for Appointments from January 2026 I don’t believe you need an “ideal client” to come to therapy — just a human being who feels they could do with some support. Some come for support with feeling stuck, to help problem solve, others feel overwhelmed, stressed, or low mood. Perhaps you just need space to talk things through with someone who isn’t a friend or family. I offer a relaxed, safe place where you can slow down, be heard, and work together to find a way through. Therapy can be about learning tools, making sense of things, or simply having time to breathe and notice what you need.

What is the relationship between weight management and mental health?

Mental health can be significantly influenced by one's physical health, so overall improvements in one's quality of life as a result of improved physical functioning from weight loss can have an overall positive impact on an individual's mental health and allow them to engage more readily in everyday activities. In addition, many strategies used to manage weight, such as exercise and maintaining a healthy diet, are also associated with reducing the symptoms of common mental health conditions, such as anxiety or depression. Individuals may also benefit from the improved self-esteem and self-efficacy that can come with successful weight management.

What is the psychological approach to losing weight?

While there are no specific therapy modalities specifically for weight loss, common psychological therapies can be highly effective in helping clients make lasting lifestyle changes. This may be called the "psychological approach" to weight loss because it does not rely on physical interventions, such as medication or weight loss surgery, to help clients lose weight. Weight loss counselling can be used in addition to or instead of such physical interventions. Some clients simply seek therapy to address the challenges that may accompany weight loss in general, including negative thoughts surrounding their body, disordered eating patterns, or difficulty completing daily tasks as a result of their weight challenges. In such cases, therapists will often utilise behavioural coaching or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy techniques to help clients understand how their thoughts may be influencing their diet and physical activity patterns.

What type of therapy is commonly used in weight loss counselling?

Weight loss counseling often involves a combination of therapy and psychoeducation. Common techniques used by weight loss counselors include journalling, thought diaries, and other Cognitive Behavioural Therapy strategies that encourage clients to consider how their feelings about their weight loss impact their mental health. Weight loss counsellors may also teach clients mindfulness exercises, which can be used by clients during and after eating to be more aware of physical cues from their body surrounding eating. Some clients looking for weight loss therapy may also benefit from group therapy approaches, which utilise the power of social connection and accountability to help clients adhere to their weight loss plan.

Is therapy recommended for individuals undergoing bariatric surgery?

While therapy is not a requirement for individuals undergoing bariatric surgery, many individuals undergoing weight loss surgery may benefit from seeing a counsellor. Prior to surgery, counsellors can help clients decide whether surgical weight loss is a good fit for them and assist in surgery preparation. Post-surgery, counsellors can assist clients with the psychological component of maintaining their weight loss, as well as help clients navigate any postoperative pain. Throughout the surgical process, therapists can help clients process body-image challenges that may come with dramatic changes in weight, as well as manage symptoms of anxiety or depression that may accompany the major life changes bariatric surgery can bring.
