Sessions include opportunities to integrate traditional psychotherapy modalities, EMDR therapy, parts work, somatic & mindfulness.
Therapy is a space to be, a gift of self-care. This is an opportunity to receive, to be heard, to learn healthy and adaptive ways to be in relationship with self and others. My approach is wholistic, integrative, and intuitive; guiding you to identify, feel, and understand your needs and emotions, reset and nurture the nervous system, learn to hold boundaries, and connect to your authentic self. Helping identify and transmute beliefs that no longer serve, from "I'm not good enough" to "I am worthy"; moving from fear to love & acceptance. Helping the mind-brain to communicate and ground into your heart and body.

I am currently undertaking a Somatic Trauma certificate, and an online counsellor certificate.
It can be really hard to admit when you’re feeling depressed, overwhelmed, burnt out, or weighed down by responsibilities. You may have tried talking to friends or family, but they don’t always understand — or they simply don’t know how to help. That’s often the moment people realise they need someone who can meet their experience with compassion, training, and genuine care.

I am a fully accredited Counselling Psychologist and EMDR therapist with a specialist interest in relational trauma and C-PTSD. I work with adults who have experienced ongoing or developmental trauma, including emotional neglect, abuse, attachment trauma, and relational wounds that continue to affect self-esteem, relationships, and a sense of safety in the world. Many of the people I work with describe feeling “stuck", living with chronic anxiety, shame, emotional overwhelm, dissociation, or a sense that something is wrong. My role is to offer a thoughtful, collaborative space where we can explore these experiences together.

You might feel stuck in patterns that you can't seem to break free of, or have difficulty connecting with other people, or feeling true intimacy. You might have been putting on a 'mask' to go out to work and function in the world, but underneath are living with pain in various forms: depression, anxiety, grief or anger. If you feel motivated to make changes but don't know where to start, then psychotherapy might be right for you. With time, as you start to feel safe enough to talk in depth about the things that have been troubling you, therapy can become a very real relationship of trust and openness.

Hi, I'm Jem. In the counselling room, I welcome the whole self, mind, body, and spirit. Metaphors and analogies often help make sense of complex emotions, and I see therapy as a journey. In our sessions, we’ll map the inner landscape of your life: understanding what shaped its mountains and valleys, how its well-worn paths were formed, and where new routes might lead. My aim is to help you process your experiences, clarify your goals, and help you step into your role as an active agent of change, empowered to create the shifts you want in your life.

Are you a new parent struggling to cope with the transition to motherhood? Are you feeling disorientated, lost and wondering who you now are since having a baby? Are you struggling to "enjoy every minute" of motherhood and therefore feel there must be something "wrong" with you? Do you feel that everyone around you seems to be moving on with their life but you are still trying to process and understand the journey that you now find yourself on? Do you feel like you are the only one struggling with new parenthood? Do you feel "seen" or understood as a person who has gone through the life-transforming rite of passage of giving birth?

Much of what has hurt us in life has happened in relationships with others. I know too, that relationships can also be a source of healing and that a therapeutic relationship can offer a chance to have a different experience of what relationships can be. I offer you a space to explore any issues that are important, or are of concern to you. My own experiences of life, and my personal journey and development, has given me an insight into myself and others that allows me to work in a compassionate and non-judgemental way

You might look like you’re coping on the outside — but internally, it feels overwhelming or exhausting. Maybe your thoughts won’t switch off, or relationships leave you feeling confused or drained. You may feel stuck in patterns of anxiety, overthinking, low mood, depression, the impact of past or traumatic experiences, burn out or repetitive relationship issues, where nothing you try seems to change things for long. Together, with individual CBT or couples counselling, we can begin to make sense of what’s happening and find a way forward.

I can support you to calm your nervous system, understand what is going on and find healthy ways to cope. Maybe you feel depressed, different or not good enough. I will work with you to find meaning in your life, to understand yourself better and put the past to rest.

I work with adults who feel stuck in recurring relationship patterns, struggle with anxiety, low self-worth, people-pleasing, fear of abandonment, or difficulty trusting themselves and others. Many of my clients want healthier, more fulfilling relationships but find themselves repeating the same cycles despite their best efforts. Together, we explore the underlying patterns and build greater confidence, emotional security, and healthier ways of relating.

I offer Integrative Counselling, as well as Clinical Supervision. I have experience of working with a range of individuals and issues. I think it is really important to understand and acknowledge the complexity of every individual's experience. I endeavour to do this by holding an open mind and creating a safe, boundaried space in which we can work. I incorporate a range of theories and skills in order to best facilitate your individual process and needs. I work in a sex and kink positive way, with all types of relationship styles. Neurodiversity and how that shapes how we experience the world is also a big part of my practice.

Are you stressed, depressed, anxious, sad or just not feeling yourself? Then counselling might be something that can help you, whether it is a new concern or a long held one. Sometimes emotional pain or life events can temporarily cloud your ability to see possible solutions, leaving you feeling stuck, confused, unhappy, anxious, sad or even shut down. The process of talking about this can gradually make things seem clearer as you make sense of your feelings and your thoughts become more ordered. You can feel change taking place, sometimes to your own surprise and so start to find a way forward that feels right for you.

I use breath work, mindfulness, body work and somatic approaches where necessary as i believe in their ability to help ground and bring awareness to our bodies.
Starting therapy may seem daunting at first as we try to make sense of our world, thoughts, feelings and emotions. We might be repeating patterns of behaviour in our present lives due to past experiences and patterns. I want to help you shift mental blocks, untangle complex emotions, resolve issues and reveal new perspectives. Whether it’s self-development, addressing emotional and psychological issues, or processing traumatic events, I will work with you to help you become more integrated in yourself. I offer both online and in-person appointments in the centre of Edinburgh where we will work together to help you achieve your goal.

My integrative approach combines person-centred counselling, CBT tools, mindfulness and somatic awareness to help you understand patterns, strengthen emotional regulation and create meaningful change.
You may appear to be functioning well on the outside, work, responsibilities, relationships, yet feel increasingly anxious, overwhelmed or disconnected inside. Perhaps alcohol or other coping habits are starting to take more space than you would like. You may be expat or navigating a major life transition and looking for a confidential space to talk openly. Together we can explore what is happening beneath the surface, develop healthier ways to cope and help you regain clarity, balance and a stronger sense of direction. Sessions are available in English or French.

Somatic Counsellors
How does somatic therapy work?
Somatic therapy is a form of treatment that focuses on how the body and mind are interconnected. In this approach, physical symptoms are addressed because they may in fact signal emotional distress. Somatic therapists combine mindfulness, talk therapy, breathwork, yoga, dance, and physical manipulations of the body to help patients become more attuned to what their body is telling them.

Is EMDR a somatic therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of somatic therapy, as it incorporates mental and physical principles. EMDR involves remembering a traumatic experience while allowing one’s eyes to track a side-to-side visual stimulus from a therapist. This lateral eye movement is believed to diminish the painful power of the memory so that it can be discussed with a therapist.

Is somatic therapy evidence-based?
Somatic therapy has been researched and studied, and some forms of somatic therapy are found to be effective in treating a wide range of conditions. Because somatic therapy encompasses many techniques, some, such as EMDR and meditation, have been studied more than others.

What is somatic trauma therapy?
Somatic trauma therapy is based on the idea that when people experience trauma, they can become stuck in the “freeze” part of a “fight, flight, or freeze” response. In this state, trauma can manifest itself both mentally and physically—through tension in the muscles, anxiety, and stress. Popular forms of somatic trauma therapy include EMDR, sensorimotor therapy, and somatic experiencing.
