Eating Disorders Counselling in Midlothian

I work with people across the spectrum of eating difficulties — from diagnosed eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia, to those seeking help for disordered eating, binge eating, restricting or compulsive eating or exercise patterns.
I believe eating difficulties develop for understandable reasons — often as ways of coping with emotions, life pressures, or internal expectations. Therapy provides a space to explore these patterns safely, understand what’s driving them, and begin to develop more sustainable ways of relating to food, your body and yourself.

I work with women experiencing PMDD-related mood changes, self-criticism, binge eating, and eating distress.
You may feel caught between high expectations and intense self-criticism. Many of the women I work with are thoughtful, capable people who push themselves hard but still feel they are falling short. At certain points in the month your mood may shift significantly, leaving you feeling like a different person. You might try to stay in control through food or routines, only to feel overwhelmed later. Even when you understand the pattern intellectually, it can still feel difficult to change. You may be looking for practical, evidence-based support to help you understand what is happening and respond differently.

I work with clients who may be struggling with health related conditions, such as eating disorder, chronic pain, or behaviour change issues.
As a Chartered Health Psychologist, my work is grounded in the understanding that many psychological difficulties make sense when viewed in the context of a person’s experiences, relationships, and environment. I work intigritively, drawing on multiple evidence-based approaches to support individuals navigating complex challenges, including trauma, mental health difficulties, and broader life stressors.

We aren't meant to fit into boxes. I believe that you are the expert of yourself and that my role is to help you explore whatever you bring in a nonjudgmental way with awareness, curiosity, and support. What brings you here today? Sometimes we seek therapy because we need someone to listen without judgment. Other times, we may feel that we have lost ourselves, or are trying to figure out who we want to be going forward. While there is no magic wand to get there in an instant, my practice style is to come alongside you and hold a safe space for you on your therapeutic journey.

It is a courageous step to reach out to a therapist and, in recognition of this, I have wholeheartedly devoted over 30 years of my life to helping people create real and lasting change. I have completed a vast amount of psychological training and am guided by extensive experience in really hearing the parts of my clients’ experience which are keeping them ‘stuck’ or are barriers to happiness. I help people to understand crucial scientific findings about how the brain affects our happiness and I use the most effective techniques to help clients become liberated from unhelpful repetitive behaviours or thought patterns.

Life can be tough and at times it is not enough to rely on our own resources nor the support of those close to us. A therapeutic relationship with a non-judgemental, empathic listener can make a huge difference in being able to move forward, ease anxieties, and find some joy in life again. I take a holistic approach to my work and together we look at all aspects of your life which can affect your thoughts and feelings. My training in pluralistic counselling and psychotherapy allows me to do this with ease as it places you as the expert in your own life and allows me to use a wide range of methodologies and tools.

Eating Disorders Counsellors
What happens in therapy for eating disorders?
In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviours, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behaviour affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?
Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counselling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioural disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?
The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behaviour, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?
Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognise they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?
Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behaviour has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
