Divorce Counselling in Midlothian
Most of us will experience difficulties that we need support and help with. Therapy is one way to get help and involves talking openly and honestly with a sensitive and skilled listener, to agree and work towards meaningful change. It is a relational process, because talking to a professional about our difficulties requires safety and trust, which develops in the context of the therapy relationship. It takes courage to reach out and ask for help, especially when that means talking to a stranger. You don't have to face things on your own.

I believe that it's important for an individual to find the right counsellor, as one counsellors method may not suit all. I therefore offer my initial consultation at a reduced rate. The initial consultation is not only an opportunity for the counsellors to find out more about the client but also for the client to find out more about the counsellor, giving both the opportunity to discover if a suitable rapport can be built, creating an appropriate environment for counselling to take place.

I’d like to begin by welcoming you and acknowledging the step it takes to begin therapy, especially if you have spent much of your life feeling “not good enough,” “too much,” or as though you don’t quite belong. I am a qualified Counsellor working primarily with anxiety and trauma, and I often support people who carry deep-rooted feelings of shame, inadequacy, or self-doubt that began in early life. When we grow up in environments where our emotional needs are not consistently met, we can internalise painful messages that continue to shape how we relate to ourselves and others in adulthood.

Having worked in the field of mental health for over 30 years, I have a deep understanding of the challenges people are faced with on a daily basis. How we experience these challenges can become overwhelming and we can feel alone, helpless and disconnected. There may be times when it's useful to seek help outside of your current circle of support by talking with a counsellor and I can help you find new ways to explore and manage the difficulties you are experiencing. I work with individuals & couples to offer short-term counselling to address immediate concerns, and long term psychotherapy to address complex issues.

Hello, my name is Emma and I’m a therapist and trainee Counselling Psychologist.
And over to you. Do you feel stuck in patterns in your life that you are struggling to shift? Or would you like to explore certain life events with someone who is not family or a friend?
We all have our ways of behaving and seeing the world that have developed over time, and perhaps been useful once, but no longer serve us. I believe that we repeat and relive what we have not processed. These repetitions show up in our relationships, work, choices, and symptoms, but it is very difficult to get out of these behaviours and thinking loops on your own.

Divorce Counsellors
How does therapy for people affected by a divorce work?
Individuals may feel a number of emotions following a divorce, such as shock, guilt, grief, anger, and fear. Therapists offer a non-judgmental space for individuals to talk about what they’ve experienced and process their emotions. Therapists will help clients develop coping strategies. They can also help a client rebuild their sense of self and self-worth and talk about what a happier future might look like.
What’s the most common type of therapy following a divorce?
There are several types of therapy that may be useful for divorce, including cognitive behavioural, acceptance and commitment, solution-focused brief, and mindfulness-based therapies. Many therapy types are talk-therapy based, which is typically the most popular option for individuals dealing with divorce. Cognitive behavioural therapy is a widely-used talk therapy, however, there’s no specific therapy type that’s designed to help people with divorce, and different types will work depending on the person.
When should an individual seek help due to a divorce?
When the feelings of a divorced individual, or an individual going through the process of divorce, begin to disrupt healthy daily functioning, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not performing at work due to problems with anxiety or motivation, if they’re no longer seeing friends due to feelings of shame, or if they’re not properly taking care of themselves as a result of depression, speaking to a professional could help.
How do you encourage someone to go to therapy due to a divorce?
It’s helpful to express concern and love for the individual while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Sharing how the individual appears to be suffering, and what effects it has on them or on their children, should be done with compassion and empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
