Therapist (Reg.
Whatever your reasons for being here, you are very welcome. I provide a very safe and confidential space to people from ALL walks of life. Whatever difficulties you are experiencing I can help you to gain insight into why they exist and persist.
Psychodynamic
therapy helps you to bring that which is unconscious into conscious awareness which helps you to understand and resolve internal conflicts which cause suffering. These internal conflicts manifest as, for example, anxiety, depression and self-destructive behaviours, particularly in relationship with others.
Psychodynamic
therapy is effective in enabling life long change.

Are you struggling with relationships, significant life changes or issues relating to self esteem, anxiety, loss, grief and trauma? Maybe the issue is less tangible, but you are aware of a changing of the seasons, a sense that you no longer know quite who you are, nor quite what you want next out of life. Life can be overwhelming and exhausting for all of us sometimes. Sometimes we need help in coping with life's challenges.

If you are feeling anxious, depressed or confused about your feelings then you have come to the right place. The relationship that you have with your therapist is very important to the healing process. A good therapeutic relationship is built on mutual respect and trust. It is a relationship where we join together to reach the goals you have. In each session we will look at the presenting issue(s) and try to untangle them from different angles. At the end of the session you may be presented with exercises, or "homework", to work on until we meet again.

My firm belief is that the first meeting is vital to building a good rapport and I pride myself on supporting my clients on their initial phone call, our first meeting and continuing throughout therapy. This allows the person to feel safe, secure and relaxed, whilst exploring their issues from past and/or present. Exploring past or present traumatic events in a clients life is my speciality however some clients may not want to explore past trauma, then the clients choice is ultimately important & respected. Clients are at the heart of every session and have the right to explore where they feel comfortable.

I am an experienced Counsellor and can offer a safe and confidential space to help you look at what it is that is making life difficult. We all at times struggle to know how to manage and cope with how we feel and whilst we know it's important to look after our physical health, we also need to take care of our hearts and minds, I see my role as one of helping you make sense of what might be causing you to feel depressed, anxious, even that life feels too much, your relationships might be affected or going to work is just too hard, you might know the cause and just need to be heard and supported to see a way forward.

For Christians I offer a confidential, listening space to assist with any personal issues when it may be difficult to discuss with someone in your church. We can integrate Christianity into the therapy and/or explore why you might have difficulty in relating to God and other people. Issues of self-worth and identity in relation to how God made us can also be explored. For non-Christians, I respect individual views and tailor therapy to individual needs.

Welcome. I aim to offer a warm, caring and genuine space, ensuring that the client has a physical and emotional ‘space’ to be heard and understood and their particular needs met. Being a pluralistic therapist, I know that different people are helped by different therapeutic methods and activities at different times. I believe that empathy and the therapeutic relationship is central to my way of working and the foundation to the way I practice. I strive to be a good listener with an ability to ‘hold’ difficult stories which helps the client feel safe and share concerns.

I am a Pluralistic Counsellor working in Royal Deeside. Working Pluralistically means that I may work in different modalities (similar to integrative counselling), where I may work in a Person Centred approach and may draw elements from CBT, Creative therapies, Solution Focused therapy or
Psychodynamic
approaches, depending on what the client finds most useful. I work with Young people and Adults who are struggling with a wide range of difficulties including anxiety and depression in a safe, therapeutic environment, which is non-judgemental. I believe it is more about who I am and my character that has drawn me into Counselling.

With an adaptable approach, including person centred (focus on emotions surrounding issues),
psychodynamic
approach (how the past affects the present) or solution focused (action based therapy) and using creative therapies (sand tray, diagrams, art) an integrative approach can be most helpful.
As a counsellor, I aim to provide safe and comfortable surroundings for anyone who would like time and space to explore any issues or concerns. I hope that through an environment of confidentiality and care we can journey together through different aspects of life, establish a relationship of mutual trust and respect which allows a healing process to begin. I explain what a person can expect and the difference a non judgemental and accepting atmosphere can make. This helps overcome any anxiety about talking to a stranger and to see if you wish to continue.

Psychodynamic
and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy tools when appropriate.
Life can bring loss, change and many challenges, and it is understandable that at times we might look for support in facing them. I aim to provide a safe confidential space to help you on your journey of self discovery; to enable you to examine your life and make new meaningful choices within it. I offer counselling to adults and young people, meeting face-to-face when COVID regulations permit and by telephone and online, which enables those at a geographic distance to connect with me. I also work for Aberdeen University offering counselling and facilitating psychoeducational workshops to the wider university community.

My practice is informed by
psychodynamic
, person-centred and attachment-based theories.
In my practice, I work with people who find it difficult to know and express what they want. I also work with clients who have experienced loss, trauma and displacement and therefore lack a sense of safety and belonging. I am experienced in working with people who find it challenging to regulate their emotions and fall into uncontrollable outbursts of confusion, anger, terror and worry. Finally, I specialise in working with individuals who struggle to form and sustain satisfying relationships and so suffer from feelings of worthlessness and emptiness.

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
