I have experience in working successfully with a very varied client group: trauma, PTSD, depression, anxiety, grief, parental support, anger, obsessive compulsive disorder,self-harm and eating disorders. I’ve always been driven by a desire to promote positive change, in more recent years I have become particularly interested in Neuroplasticity - our brain's ability to change and adapt, to learn and unlearn, for example it has the ability to unlearn negative behaviours, thought patterns and responses and learn new ones in their place. We can train or re-wire our brain to change its structure and teach it to function in different ways.

I also completed specialist post qualification training in CAT ( Cognitive Analytic Therapy) & and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing).
You may be considering therapy to address specific difficulties such as depression, the impact of trauma, or difficulties in relationships with others, or you may have a wish for personal growth. Therapy recognises the importance of our experiences and our relationships or contact with others and our efforts to manage these. It offers the opportunity to gain an understanding of ourselves, of how we think, feel, behaviour & relate (including with ourselves) & consider change. After almost 30 years of working as a therapist in the NHS I moved into independent practice.

I use a holistic approach to therapy that combines CBT, mindfulness, and compassion for personalised support.
Are you feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, self-doubt, or life’s daily pressures? I support adults, young people and children to manage anxiety, build resilience, and regain a sense of control in their lives. Avoidant behaviours such as withdrawal, procrastination, or overreliance on screens often mask deeper emotional distress. Through a compassionate and practical approach, I help clients uncover these patterns, develop healthier coping strategies, and build lasting confidence.

Individual & Couples Counselling & Clinical Supervision. “Life doesn’t get better by chance, it gets better by change”. At times we can all feel anxious or uncertain of our future. Sometimes we need to make changes in order to improve our situation. However, the prospect of change can feel overwhelming, leaving us feeling disconnected, isolated and lonely. Hearing your thoughts out loud, with a professional, can be an opportunity to gain some clarity and begin the process of change. I truly believe that a small change in the way we think can make a big difference to the way we feel.

I combine cognitive and somatic approaches to understand how your nervous system responds to stress and help resolve what’s happening at a bodily level; not just through insight, but through lived change.
I work with people who might know what they want or why something is difficult, yet in the moment your body reacts and control is lost. Maybe you are neurodivergent, highly sensitive, or shaped by earlier adversity. I can help you unstick, notice your patterns, and support you in becoming cool, calm, and collected. To trust your responses, so you can meet life with more choice, steadiness, and authenticity rather than old survival strategies. I’m easy going with a good sense of humour.

I’m a coaching psychologist based in Edinburgh. I work with a small number of high-performing individuals navigating growth, pressure, or psychological inflection points — professionally or personally. I offer a discreet, bespoke coaching service — sometimes through monthly engagements, or intensive on-call days. This is not therapy, but a strategic psychological partnership. Together, we co-create a space where our relationship and the work you want to do is held safely, from a place of deep care. I use a theoretical coaching approach, working on your current and future life. Deep listening helps, as does challenge.

Cognitive Behavioural (CBT) Counsellors
How does cognitive behavioural therapy work?
Cognitive behavioural therapy works by exploring how your thoughts affect your emotions and experiences. CBT helps you identify distortions in your thinking. For example, you may tend to jump to the worst case scenario catastrophising or think in extremes (all-or-nothing thinking). A therapist can teach you how to push back against those thoughts to ultimately change your feelings and behavior for the better. They can also provide coping skills to better deal with stressors and challenges.

When do I know to seek treatment with cognitive behavioural therapy?
It’s reasonable to consider cognitive behavioural therapy if you struggle to manage difficult emotions or behaviors to such an extent that you are not getting the most out of life on a day-to-day basis. If you want a shorter term, concrete, skills-based approach, CBT is a great option. (By contrast, other types of therapy may devote more time to exploring your past and its effects.) The decision to seek CBT also depends on the condition you’re treating; CBT is an effective treatment for anxiety, depression, trauma, and many other disorders.

How can I find a cognitive behavioural therapist for someone else?
To find a cognitive behavioural therapist for someone else, you may want to begin by discussing the person’s problem, researching cognitive behavioural therapy, and assessing whether the approach is the right fit. You could then reach out to a few cognitive behavioral therapists in this directory, explain the scenario, have a consultation with those available, and determine who could be a good match.

Why is CBT such a popular form of therapy?
CBT has become a popular form of therapy because it is effective and accessible. Robust research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions. And CBT can be learned in relatively few sessions, which means that many people can engage in the process, afford it, and see results quickly. It involves learning concrete skills such as disputing unhelpful thoughts; these skills can also be taught and spread widely.
