I am a Person Centred therapist working online and in the greater Glasgow area. The person centred approach is a non-directive form of therapy and my role as a therapist is not to guide or direct clients, but to provide a safe and judgement-free space where together we can explore whatever is causing you distress or getting in the way of you feeling okay. It is you who knows best what you have experienced and what you are going through. By giving you space to talk through those experiences and be understood, my role and expertise is in helping you build emotional congruence and autonomy to find the right way forward for you.

Life can feel meaningless living without a connection with ourselves, our bodies and each other. Traumatic events and stress can lock us in a state of fear or helplessness causing us to behave reactively or to withdraw from life. The prolonged stress / anxiety of continously trying to suppress symptoms or figure everything out alone can feel completely exhausting right? As we continously battle the many 'shoulds' and judgements we ourselves and others place upon us, decision making becomes a terrifying process, preventing us from living - merely existing. I understand how isolating this can feel going through alone. I am here.

Hi, I'm Jem. In the counselling room, I welcome the whole self, mind, body, and spirit. Metaphors and analogies often help make sense of complex emotions, and I see therapy as a journey. In our sessions, we’ll map the inner landscape of your life: understanding what shaped its mountains and valleys, how its well-worn paths were formed, and where new routes might lead. My aim is to help you process your experiences, clarify your goals, and help you step into your role as an active agent of change, empowered to create the shifts you want in your life.

Within my practice, it is imperative that all clients are aware that therapy is taken at their individual pace. Following a thorough assessment, I help clients understand their current difficulties by building a narrative of what past events have contributed to the current problem and what may be maintaining it. From this, we collaboratively create an individual treatment plan that targets the presenting problem/s using the most relevant therapeutic approach available.

People that come along to therapy may be be looking for support with difficult experiences in their life, and feel open to expanding their way of noticing and responding to their difficulties. I work with people who are open to finding more about themselves, and understanding how living in the modern world can impact our mental health. Dropping the need to please others as a priority, people can develop radical self-acceptance. I take an anti-oppressive approach to therapy. Therapy can be a source of affirmation, but also of challenge. I will challenge harmful patterns, and provide support to reduce the risk of harm.

I’m a neurodivergent, queer and trans therapist. I know what it’s like to feel anxious, overwhelmed, low or just plain exhausted by trying to exist in a world that isn’t designed with us in mind. The things that affect you often affect me too — I don’t sit above you as “the expert.” Instead, I bring my own lived experience alongside my training and tools as a therapist. My style is relaxed and friendly, with space for humour and honesty as much as gentleness. If you’ve ever felt like you have to explain yourself or translate your experience, this is a space where you don’t have to.

Suicidal Ideation Counsellors
How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?
Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioural therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?
The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
