Deciding to engage in therapy is a positive and brave decision to embark on a journey of self-discovery. As a therapist, my role is to create a secure base and be a guide for you, so that you can take up this challenge of self-discovery and move towards greater consciousness, choice and positivity. While working with difficulties in the present many have their origins in emotional experiences and unconscious emotional learning in early life relationships. This includes family, main caregivers and other influential figures. Also events and consistent experiences, which may amount to degrees of difficulty, pain or trauma.

Originally from Manchester, I now live in Glasgow. I started my counselling training in London on Goldsmith University’s Graduate Certificate in Humanistic & Psychodynamic Counselling, before completing the University of Strathclyde’s MSc, Counselling & Psychotherapy. At Strathclyde I trained in Person-Centred Therapy and this forms the basis of my practice. I have experience working with a wide variety of people, I’m particularly familiar with autism and neurodiversity, and I work with all kinds of issues including depression and anxiety, as well as those vague feelings of just not being what you ought to be.

Perhaps you're going through a life transition, such as becoming parents, or you're raising a family and you would love to find that spark between you as a couple again. Have you noticed a distance between you, and that you miss the closeness and intimacy you once shared? Maybe your relationship has reached a crisis point such as an affair and you're looking to help your relationship heal. Or maybe communication has become an issue, leaving you feeling that your true needs are not being met and you would like to understand each other better.

Pain, manifests in many varied ‘illnesses’. Whether they be Physical or Psychological. It could be Arthritis, ADHD, Addictions, Migraines, or Mental Ill Health. The root cause is always some environmental trigger, whether in childhood or adulthood. The Medical Institutions treat only the symptoms of this pain, not the causes. Pharmacotherapy can be beneficial in the short term, to alleviate intense physical ir psychic pain, but Western Medicine, has demonstrably failed, to address the causes and manifestations, of chronic illness: physical or psychological. I offer an initial Assessment of causes, and self-care coping mechanisms

I’m a qualified post grad CBT therapist, Yoga instructor, and studied islamic psychology (Sufism) for 17 years. Life at times can feel a little over whelming, we can lose perspective and fall into a pattern of unhealthy habits, sleeping too late, emotional eating, drinking too much alcohol, and in constant worry. These behaviours may be your coping strategies to help you feel better but aren’t so helpful to your physical and mental well being resulting in feeling anxious and depressed. Having an outside perspective on what’s going on in your life can really help refocus your mind and realign your life style with your core values.

Hello and thank you for looking into my profile. It can be challenging finding the right therapist amidst a sea of warm faces and shiny profiles full of experience. However, I firmly believe that like any relationship, the therapeutic one needs to feel like a 'good fit' too. This outlook forms the ethos of my therapy practice as a counselling psychologist where I work in collaboration with a client to bring change through the healing properties of a relationship. It is my belief that a supportive, accepting relationship allows for deeper self exploration and long-lasting change.

Change is constant, change is inevitable. Life moves us in different directions affecting every aspect of our lives. Our relationships, both personal and professional, change. Our relationship with ourselves changes over time. We can have a tricky time expressing the impact this has on us. We can feel stuck, overwhelmed and weighed down by the load we carry. The juggling act of modern life, having too many balls in the air, can be exhausting. Counselling offers you a time to rest that load, maybe even leave some of it with me. A time to reflect, putting aspects of your life into perspective.

At different times in our lives we go through challenges that can affect how we feel and have a negative impact on us. We all have unique ways of dealing with situations. At these times, many people find it helpful to explore how they are feeling with somebody else. It is important at these times to have a safe space to do this.

Spirituality Counsellors

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviours. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualisation, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
