Counselling is a safe place for you to stop, take stock and explore the parts of your life that you are finding difficult. It is a time for you to use for whatever you decide, and always without pressure or judgement. I have particular experience in working with trauma and
sexual abuse
, but you can use counselling for all sorts of issues, for example self-esteem, stress, depression, anxiety, bereavement, relationships, suicidal thoughts, harassment at work, identity issues, breakup, or decision-making. Dealing with ‘unwanted habits’ of whatever kind can be a large part of counselling.

I am a qualified Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist based in Ayrshire. I work predominantly with a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approach, but also draw on other therapeutic approaches to provide a more integrative and tailored therapy for you. There are times when we all experience situations that cause distress or uncertainty and it can be difficult to move past these events or to speak to those close to us.

Life is a series of changes, often bringing loss and pain but also the seeds of a positive transformation. Even if you're unsure how to move forward, a theme can emerge. Counselling can facilitate a new understanding of ourselves, our different relationships, our place in the world. By reassessing hopes and fears, we can work towards the difference we want to experience. Alongside general counselling, I have specialist experience in post-natal depression and traumatic emotional and
sexual abuse
. My approach, however, is to treat every person without presumptions, trusting the space that opens up and finding the best way for you.

I work with clients with a wide range of presenting issues, from low self esteem and relationship problems, to survivors of
sexual abuse
/traumas.
I believe that the most important relationship we will have over our lifetime is the relationship that we have with ourselves. Throughout our lives we can come to conclusions about ourselves and others that cause us to feel insecure with who we are and around others. My job as a therapist and life coach is to provide a talking space for you to figure out what is holding you back from achieving the relationships and lifestyle you deserve. The more we understand who we really are, the easier it becomes to truly and deliberately create the life we desire.

My work is trauma-informed, and I have specific training to work with CPTSD, domestic violence and
sexual abuse
/trauma.
Have you ever asked yourself, "How did I get here?" or "Will I ever feel better?" Maybe something has happened to you recently or in the past. You do your best daily, yet you still feel easily overwhelmed by your thoughts and emotions. Perhaps you struggle to find the 'right' words to talk about it and shut down if others ask how you are. You feel lonely and like nobody understands you. Maybe you tell yourself, "I can't be struggling right now," because you are scared of what may happen if you aren't okay. You are exhausted and want things to change. As someone who's been there personally, I am confident I can support you.

I am committed to providing a space where we can work together to reflect and try and make sense of what is going on for you at the moment, as well as help you find your way through this experience. Domestic abuse can have a significant affect on mental health. Whether the abuse happened as a child or as an adult, abusive experiences can lead to low mood, high anxiety, flashbacks to incidents, difficulty trusting others as well as low self-confidence and self-esteem, even when the abuse is historic. These are all normal reactions to difficult and painful experiences. Specialist counsellors who understand what can happen and its impact on you helps recovery from those experiences. However, not everywhere in the UK offers specialist counselling: Dactari's online counselling service allows access to such specialism across the UK.

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
