21st century living is fraught with challenges: emotional, financial, existential. In the UK it is claimed that 1 in 4 adults experience at least one mental health problem in any given year - a staggering statistic. Trying to cope with your distress and despair can feel very isolating and confusing; talking things through, however, can help to make sense of your struggles.
Finding the right counsellor can be a daunting prospect; so many names, so many faces. If you choose to work with me, I hope you'll find that I offer a safe place where you can share and explore your thoughts and feelings in confidence and without judgement.

Many women come to me because motherhood feels harder than they expected. They may be struggling with postpartum anxiety or low mood, intrusive thoughts, mum guilt, postpartum rage, overwhelm or feeling they have lost themselves after having a baby. Some are coping with birth trauma or difficult breastfeeding experiences, sleep deprivation, relationship strain or the constant pressure to get everything right. Alongside perinatal work I also support women dealing with low self esteem, people pleasing and old childhood wounds that have resurfaced due to life stressors. If you feel exhausted, anxious or not yourself, you are not alone.

I am an experienced therapist, with around 30 years in practice helping people who feel stuck or disconnected, who are suffering losses, in transitions in life, or struggling with something that just doesn't feel right. If that sounds like you, you may wonder whether it's even possible to feel alright in the world as it is, or maybe there's something in your past or present experience that you've never really felt able to speak about. Counselling, an attuned, non-judgmental relationship in which it's safe to explore, can really shift your experience.

Living with chronic illness or neurodivergence often means living with layers of frustration, grief, loss and emotional turmoil that other people just can’t see or understand. Dealing every single day with fatigue, pain, loss of identity, trying to do everything and all this while not knowing how you’re going to feel day to day can have a massive impact, leading to emotional and physical burnout. I work compassionately with people who are over being misunderstood, tired of just existing and feeling like their worth as a person is related to what they can get done each day.

The clients I work with come from all walks of life, my experience both personally and professionally has taught me that as humans we are pretty skilled at waging quiet wars within ourselves. People pleasing, sound familiar? The tendency to shy away from assertive communication/exerting ones boundaries? What potentially happens as result when we are too afraid to implement the aforementioned? We harbour internal resentments, thereby impeding our own growth & authenticity. These issues essentially bleed into all corners of our lives. The unmentionable is the unmanageable but we can, if we so wish, learn new ways.

You may be someone who feels overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected from yourself, even if on the surface you appear to be coping. Many of the people I work with are thoughtful, self-aware, and exhausted from trying to “push through” anxiety, low mood, stress, or long-standing patterns that no longer serve them. You might be struggling with confidence, identity, or a harsh inner critic, and looking for a therapist who is relatable, authentic, and flexible in their approach — someone who can help you understand yourself more deeply and work with your strengths.

What does therapy for parenting look like?
Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.
When should a parent seek therapy?
When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.
How long does therapy take for parenting problems?
Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.
Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?
Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
