Finding a therapist who you feel really "gets you" is not always easy and can take time. From personal experience I know how invaluable therapy can be when you share your vulnerabilities and receive compassion without judgement in return. Whatever is bringing you to counselling at this time in your life, I would offer you an open and honest space to share your feelings without fear of rejection. I would be privileged to help in your search for the answers that you are looking for to move forward from where you are now, and in doing so help you feel more at peace within yourself.

A warm welcome to you. Challenges that you might be facing right now, may seem small on the outside but can actually be very big on the inside which may be stopping you from enjoying and living life to the full. You can't change the past but you can change the influence that the past is having on you. I aim to offer you a safe, private and peaceful space to talk about the difficulties you are facing, to reflect on past experiences that may have left you anxious or depressed, and to work alongside you in making the changes that you feel you need. I am an member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP)

Hello, my name is Andy, I’m a counsellor & psychotherapist based in Finnieston, Glasgow and a Registered Member of BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy). I work with clients (aged 16+) in-person and online. Working online means I’m able to help people across the UK & worldwide. Life can feel meaningless living without a connection with ourselves, our bodies and each other. Traumatic events and stress can lock us in a state of fear or helplessness causing us to behave reactively or to withdraw from life. The prolonged stress / anxiety of continously trying to suppress symptoms or figure everything out alone can feel completely exhausting right? As we continously battle the many 'shoulds' and judgements we ourselves and others place upon us, decision making becomes a terrifying process, preventing us from living - merely existing. I understand how isolating this can feel going through alone. I am here.

I have a particular interest in working with people with relationship problems, including their relationship with their self and, with their own emotions and emotional regulation. This can manifest as social anxiety, with an underlying sense of not being good enough or being odd/not fitting in with other people and society’s expectations. If you struggle with your own identity - not knowing your own likes/dislikes/values (sometimes called codependency), then get in touch. We can explore together what gets in the way of you knowing (and accepting) the real you.

Hello and welcome. If you are reading this, you are likely feeling in a stuck, difficult or distressing place in your life. We all bring a unique history and mind-set to the life difficulties we encounter. These will have given us strengths to help manage problems, but sometimes we need to discover new ways we might feel, think or act. I think of my specialism as 'stuckness' - whether in emotions, relationships or unhelpful behaviours - which is often expressed in terms such as: anxiety, depression, stress, fear, trauma, low self-esteem, sleep problems, bulimia and binge eating, adjustment to loss, illness & major life changes.

With 20 years' experience, I am a leading authority in marriage, couple and relationship counselling. I have had the pleasure and privilege of helping countless couples resolve their differences and re-establish an emotional connection. I am passionate about my work and the changes I help to facilitate. When you’re having a relationship or marital problems, it’s natural to want to talk about it. Unfortunately, turning to those around you isn’t always possible or the best option. What you really need is an independent ear — someone who can view your relationship without bias and who won’t take sides.

If things are feeling overwhelming, if distressing or worrying thoughts are getting in the way of enjoying life, then counselling may help you work out why and how to move forward again. It may mean looking at past experiences or what’s stopping you following the path you would like to choose now. It might be longer term issues, such as anxiety or depression, impacts of traumatic events or you may be looking for a more fulfilling way of living your life. In all of these things and more, I would welcome the opportunity to join you on your journey to healing and growth.

My way of working is integrative which involves incorporating various therapeutic approaches into therapy. I value the subjectivity and diversity of all experiences and believe that one approach to therapy does not meet all needs. In working this way, I am guided by the theory and values of person-centred therapy (PCT) and integrate other approaches, namely cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and schema therapy. For me, the therapeutic relationship is essential in achieving desired therapeutic outcomes therefore, I aim to develop this relationship first and foremost.

Emotionally Focused Counsellors

Who is emotionally focused therapy for?

Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.

Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?

People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.

What happens in emotionally focused therapy?

Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.

What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?

EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
