Sometimes we experience changes or traumas that leave us struggling with the pressures of life, relationships, work, or studies. This can affect our self-esteem, our sense of identity, and our ability to cope. This can become overwhelming and may lead us to unhelpful or harmful thoughts and behaviours. With help, we can overcome our difficulties and learn to manage our emotions more effectively. With compassion, empathy, respect, and a safe space, we feel heard, considered, and valued. By understanding our thoughts and behaviours we can feel empowered to make positive changes that can lead us to fuller and more enjoyable lives.

Our many experiences in life , the messages we may have taken from these and how they may now play out in our lives can impact on us day to day. However this is often out with our awareness as a result of habit. The difficulty can be identifying what these are and actually recognising that there are different perspectives and alternative ways that we can learn to cope and function in a way that feels healthier. Using a CBT approach we can work collaboratively to explore and understand your problems further, and begin to identify possible unhelpful thinking patterns and behaviours that may currently be causing you difficulty .

Are past events stopping you from moving forward with your life? Do you feel anxious, depressed, stressed, but you cant pinpoint why? That is often the case with mental health, you know there is something just not working properly but you don't know how to fix it. Although you can't change the past, you can learn not to let it control you. CBT is a talking therapy that can help you manage your problems by changing the way you think and behave. CBT believes that your thoughts about a certain situation can often affect how you feel emotionally and physically. I can help you change those unhelpful thinking styles. Just say hello.

Counselling is a safe place for you to stop, take stock and explore the parts of your life that you are finding difficult. It is a time for you to use for whatever you decide, and always without pressure or judgement. I have particular experience in working with trauma and sexual abuse, but you can use counselling for all sorts of issues, for example self-esteem, stress, depression, anxiety, bereavement, relationships, suicidal thoughts, harassment at work, identity issues, breakup, or decision-making. Dealing with ‘unwanted habits’ of whatever kind can be a large part of counselling.

As a practicing Counselling Psychologist, I offer an accepting and understanding relationship and work hard to help people understand and overcome different challenges. I work with clients with both short-term and long-term difficulties which can have a negative impact mental health and wellbeing. I recognise that there is not a one-size-fits-all approach to therapy and instead provide a more tailor-made approach to psychological counselling informed by goals for therapy and the working relationship.

What happens in therapy for behavioural issues?

No matter the type of therapy, individuals form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is often therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Individuals learn to identify situations that are especially troublesome for them and acquire new patterns of thinking and behaving. In therapy for ADHD, one of the most common behaviour issues for children, individuals learn how to improve frustration tolerance, control impulsivity, manage attentional focus, and gain skills of self-organisation.

What therapy types help with behavioural issues?

Many types of therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Perhaps best-known and most widely tested is cognitive and behavioural therapy (CBT), in which individuals learn new behavioral strategies and curb reactivity to frustrating or distressing situations that trigger disruptive behaviour. Anger, anxiety, mood disorders, impulse control problems are commonly addressed in CBT. Family therapy or parent management training is often helpful to reduce parent-child conflict and behavioral difficulties at home.

How long does therapy last for behavioural issues?

Among popular approaches to treating behavioural concerns, CBT is considered a short-term therapy intended to be administered in 15 to 20 weekly sessions. Parent training in behaviour management, often used when the underlying cause of behaviour issues is ADHD in children under 12, usually occurs in weekly sessions for 8 to 16 weeks. When behavioural issues stem from persistent aggression or defiance, therapy may last for months, and usually targets both children and their parents.

How effective is therapy for behaviour issues?

Studies show that therapy for behaviour issues in children is highly effective and may prevent the development of antisocial behaviour later in life. Family intervention—parent management training or family therapy, both of which involve parents and children together—is considered most effective, notably for children under age 12 who persistently engage in aggressive, defiant, rule-breaking or other disruptive behaviour. Whether provided alone or in combination with medication, CBT is highly effective in helping people regulate their emotions, and for people with ADHD, it addresses impulsiveness, hyperactivity and attentional focus.
