Change is constant, change is inevitable. Life moves us in different directions affecting every aspect of our lives. Our relationships, both personal and professional, change. Our relationship with ourselves changes over time. We can have a tricky time expressing the impact this has on us. We can feel stuck, overwhelmed and weighed down by the load we carry. The juggling act of modern life, having too many balls in the air, can be exhausting. Counselling offers you a time to rest that load, maybe even leave some of it with me. A time to reflect, putting aspects of your life into perspective.

I offer a calm, reflective space where you can explore what's happening in your life and make sense of how past experiences may still be influencing you today. My approach is psychodynamic, which means we look at the patterns that repeats - in relationships, self-talk and emotions - and begin to understand where they come from and how they can change. Therapy with me isn't about fixing who you are, but about understanding yourself more deeply so you can live with greater ease and self-awareness.

Typical work with clients struggling with stress, anger or trauma would initially involve exploration of symptoms, identification of stuckness experienced and establishing hopes and aspirations.
Life can feel meaningless living without a connection with ourselves, our bodies and each other. Traumatic events and stress can lock us in a state of fear or helplessness causing us to behave reactively or to withdraw from life. The prolonged stress / anxiety of continously trying to suppress symptoms or figure everything out alone can feel completely exhausting right? As we continously battle the many 'shoulds' and judgements we ourselves and others place upon us, decision making becomes a terrifying process, preventing us from living - merely existing. I understand how isolating this can feel going through alone. I am here.

Deciding to engage in therapy is a positive and brave decision to embark on a journey of self-discovery. As a qualified therapist with eleven years experience, (& qualified clinical supervisor) my role is to create a secure base and be a guide for you, so that you can take up this challenge of self-discovery and move towards greater conscious awareness, choice & empowerment. While working with difficulties in the present many have their origins in emotional experiences and unconscious emotional learning in early life relationships. Also events and consistent experiences, which may amount to degrees of difficulty, pain or trauma.

My ideal clients are individuals or couples who feel emotionally or relationally stuck, unsettled, or caught in painful patterns. They may be dealing with anxiety, shame, trauma, loss, intimacy difficulties, trust ruptures, family conflict, or repeated arguments that no longer feel workable. Often they come at a point of rupture or transition, or simply because something doesn’t feel right. They want greater clarity, emotional freedom, stronger boundaries, deeper understanding, and more satisfying ways of relating to themselves and others.

I am a Senior Psychologist offering compassionate and deeply relational psychological therapy, both short- and long-term. People often seek support when feeling stuck, overwhelmed, helpless, or highly self-critical. Sometimes clients describe that they cannot get out of patterns of distressing behaviours, thoughts, or emotions, and that relating to both themselves and others seems difficult, painful, or interferes with daily life and future commitments. I listen carefully, we explore their stories, find ways of understanding. I do not believe in a magical fix, but we all can become more ourselves finding appropriate choices.

How long does therapy take for anger management?

Treatment duration depends on the person’s specific challenges and circumstances. There are treatments for anger problems that are shorter and more goal-oriented, like Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), which can last weeks to months. Others, like Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) may last between six months and a year, while a more intensive treatment, like psychodynamic therapy, is open-ended, and clients may see their therapist for a year or longer.

How do you know if you need therapy for anger management?

Everyone gets mad from time to time. But when angry outbursts become frequent and cause damage to relationships, whether at home or in the office, it may be a good time to look into therapy. A therapist can assess where a client’s anger may be coming from, suggest strategies for averting angry outbursts, and help a client create a plan to become a calmer version of themselves.

Is there medication for anger management?

Medications do exist that help people mitigate the feeling of anger, but these are reserved for people with anger-related psychiatric disorders, such as intermittent explosive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, or in some cases borderline personality disorder. In these cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help with the client’s symptoms. In most cases of anger management, however, talk therapy is the recommended treatment, along with lifestyle changes where relevant.

What’s the best way to encourage someone to seek help for anger issues?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either themselves or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
