Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) Counselling in Merchant City, Glasgow

Using Exposure and Response Prevention ( ERP), we’ll work together to face those fears, untangle the anxiety, and build the tools you need to live a life that feels more open, less burdened, and true to who you are.
Hi, I’m Laura and I’m glad you’re here. Living with OCD can feel like being stuck in an endless cycle of doubt and fear, especially when it comes to those taboo, “unspeakable” thoughts that no one seems to talk about. It’s exhausting, isolating, and can leave you questioning yourself in ways that feel unbearable. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone—and you don’t have to face it alone. I specialise in working with people just like you—those navigating the challenges of OCD, including its most stigmatised and misunderstood themes.

With OCD, as well as ERP treatment, I also offer inference based CBT which is a gentler evidence based approach that does not require intensive exposure.
Do you experience intrusive thoughts that cause distress, a constant doubt over whether you have checked the door is locked, or a need to undertake compulsions to reduce anxiety? Does part of you realise that these thoughts and compulsions are unhelpful, yet you struggle to stop them? Do you worry you are ‘going mad’ due to this? These may be symptoms of OCD, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder which can be treated successfully with therapy. We can work together to overcome this. Intrusive thoughts do not define you or mean you are 'bad', they are simply thoughts, and we will work to together to take away their power.

Life feels hectic and busy most of the time. I'm sure at some point in the past we have all wished for a quiet moment to reboot our busy lives. So why is it so hard to make that happen? There are so many pressures we put on ourselves and the way we go about life..... if you need a neutral, supporting person to talk these feelings through with, or even some support in seeing things in a different way... I'm here! Friendly, enthusiastic and very supportive. No ones circumstances are the same and no one answer is right. We could find a new way of coping together to help you find the way to adjust to life today and going forward.

If anxiety, overthinking and worry are interrupting daily life, you may feel stuck and unsure how to change this. Let's face it, most of us have never been taught how to manage emotions, so we bury them and hope for the best. Our mind then regurgitates our usual worries and fears, and the cycle repeats. The good news is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can provide a clear path to understanding your thoughts and feelings (there is always a reason), and finding solutions that work for you. In your CBT sessions you can learn strategies to move from worry to calm, from overwhelm to being in control, and get back to being you.

Do you feel constantly exhausted and burned out? Like nothing you ever do is good enough? Do you have autism, ADHD, a chronic health condition and/or are you part of the LGBTQI+ community?
You might describe yourself as different, other, a perfectionist or a failure. You might be using up all your energy just to stay afloat.
You may have a concrete goal in mind around daily functioning or work performance. Or your goal may be to talk a little more kindly to yourself and rest when you need to. Perhaps you just want to feel more comfortable in your own skin.

What if. Two words that send your mind down a well-worn path. Words and images that pop into your head at any moment and no matter how hard you try to push it away you find yourself stuck; thinking, feeling and doing the same thing over and over. Maybe it’s reliving the past, maybe it’s worrying about the future, or feeling you need to do something right now or something bad will happen. “What if” is hard to live with. But when your mind is stuck in the “what if’s” your brain is telling you there is something you need to figure out, something you need to rebalance.

It’s normal, at some point, to get stuck, or to struggle facing life's challenges. Sometimes we know exactly what’s wrong but at other times we might just have a nagging sense that something isn’t quite right. By uncovering the obstacles holding you back, you can learn to problem-solve, make better choices, practise healthier coping strategies, and turn your goals into realities to find a greater sense of peace and fulfilment.

Do I need exposure and response prevention therapy?
Many clients decide to seek help for obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours when these symptoms are distressing enough to disrupt everyday life. Any thoughts or behaviours that cause friction in close relationships are also worth addressing. In addition, the client’s symptoms don’t have to be severe for them to benefit from ERP therapy.
Is exposure and response prevention therapy part of cognitive behavioural therapy?
Exposure and response prevention is one specific type of CBT that focuses on behavioural change in response to triggering stimuli. It is related to exposure therapy but adds an additional component of preventing compulsive and harmful responses.
How long does exposure and response prevention therapy take?
While every patient is different, exposure and response prevention therapy typically lasts around 12 sessions, although some treatments can take longer. A therapist will determine if the treatment is complete based on how the client faces their fears, particularly the strongest ones. When a client feels less anxiety about stimuli that once evoked terror or distress, that is generally an indication that they are nearing the end of ERP therapy.
What are the limitations of exposure and response prevention therapy?
The most common pitfalls of exposure and response prevention therapy include not addressing a client’s core fears, allowing the client to avoid their most distressing stimuli, and using imaginary exposure when the client requires real-life exposure (and vice versa). ERP therapy is most effective when the client commits to the full course of treatment; if the client stops early or doesn’t practice what they have learned outside of therapy sessions, they are less likely to have successful outcomes.
